You don’t need to go to Seattle or Portland to see that. You’ll find similarly depressing scenes in most medium to large American cities if you know where to look.

I just know he's up that way. And yes, I see it here in quaint towns of new jersey. Thank the Sackler family and the rest of opioid pushing big pharma for that.

For those of us in the U.S., I post the following without comment: Highest to Lowest - Prison Population Rate | World Prison Brief (prisonstudies.org)

The prison business is very profitable in the US, and since the very idea of rehabilitation is counter to the fiduciary responsibilities of the prison companies and their shareholders (repeat business is good business), well the rest is not hard to figure out...

There are so many laws, we all likely violate some each day, and if the police decide it's your day to be the victim, then you are screwed. Many people linger in prisons in the US because a financial burden is placed on them that they cannot get out from under. There's very little justice in the justice system.

I spent 40 years in Law Enforcement and call BS on this statement. And there are less than 10% of prisoners housed in private prisons. Prisons are run by state or federal agencies.

Well their own version of football will be superior because they have the advantage of learning from everyone else's mistakes and improving on the pitiful efforts of those that went before them.

Let's just say there's ample body cam and dash cam footage out there to indicate otherwise. But I'll revise my statement to say that if any if the bad police decide it's your day, you are screwed.

Being a police officer is a difficult, thankless job and sometimes officers find themselves in situations where seconds count and not all of the facts are known before a course of action must be determined. Yes, bad cops exist and they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, but I think that these individuals comprise a very small fraction of law enforcement personnel. Most officers take their duty “to protect and to serve” very seriously and they put their lives at risk every day to keep the rest of us safe.

The vast majority of the people in law enforcement (99%+) just want to do their jobs and go home at the end of their shift to their families. There is nothing in it for them to go around looking for people to charge with a crime, the paperwork itself makes it not worth the effort. And with the media today looking to blow every incident up as 'police bias or brutality' their job is made even harder. That's one reason why a lot of the successful street policing since the 90's is no longer followed, and why street crime is up, the cops just aren't making the effort when they know they are the ones that end up as the target. There are always some sub-performing people in every job, cops are no different, but everyone I've ever known in that business have been straight up people looking to do their best job.

No one goes on TikTok to say how their local police officer waved at them or let them off of a speeding ticket.

I've seen plenty of video of cops letting people off - mostly it's letting other cops off, but it does happen to even regular people on occasion.

repeat business is good business
I knew a criminal lawyer and he told me he gets a lot of repeat business. His job is to keep them out of prison so they can commit more crimes. I had never thought of the judicial system in those terms before.

As an attorney myself, I’ll be the first to say that his job as a lawyer is to be a zealous advocate for his clients within the bounds of the law. If he truly said that his role is to keep his clients out of prison so that they can commit more crimes, he needs a refresher course in legal ethics and a new career.

At one time I came close to getting into law enforcement after getting out of the Navy I applied for detention technician an odd name for a jailor did not get the job. My uncle was a jailor during the 1960's at the Oakland CA jail had to be rough there at that time. Got another job with the same city but in Park Maintenace less stress so a better job. The written test was strange to see how you think for that jail guard job. Was a trip to go by auto shop in the Corp Yard those cops would dent up their police cars a lot of body damage and a few motorcycles you would see them parked there for repair. Did do shore patrol overseas in the Navy, they gave you an SP arm band and a radio and billy club and one week training and you patrolled the bars making sure sailors stayed out of trouble.
