There has been a lot of talk surrounding transitionals lately and I thought it would be interesting to see what we collectively define as a transitional.

    Maybe:

    2998-61
    2998-62
    105.002-62
145.022-68 with raised logo dial as per 321 but with 861
    145.022-69 with hippocampus case back
and what about the iterations of the straight back "first watch worn on the moon".

    Cheers

IMHO the only real transitional is: 145.022-68 with raised logo dial as per 321 but with 861

I am of the same understanding that the label 'Transitional' referred to the 145.022-68 with 861.

I think there are lots of transitions though, many of which Barking Mad has listed.

Having just picked up a 105.002, I like to think of it as a transitional (lower case) as it is basically a 2998-62 but with the new numbering system.

I only play in this narrow field of Speedmaster references so these are my criteria to be a considered a transitional I would be interested in.

    145.022-68 Stamped case back
Stepped Dial with raised logo and long hour markers
    DON Bezel
    Hippocampus case back
Preferred fan tail long chronograph hand flat bottom acceptable

    or

    145.022-69 Stamped case back
Stepped dial with printed logo and short hour markers
    DON Bezel preferred DNN acceptable
    Hippocampus case back
    Flat bottom chronograph hand

I agree with you however the term has been used with a lot wider reference lately and was interested in what others thought.

    Cheers

I think that my later issue 105.002-62 with baton hands is a transitional Speedie.

For me, transitional is using parts from both the
previous generation and the new generation.
Case, bezel, hands, dial, movement. Small changes,
such as the font positioning on the dial is an
    intra-generational difference, hence use of Mk.1, Mk.2,
etc. in the Rolex hobby. Transitional change is
    inter-generational change.

I don't have the Bible. What makes the 27320XXX rare? Just out of curiosity what does the book reference as the earliest known 145.022-68?

Thanks for the info. So why is the 27.320xxx a rare transitional?

I'd say a number of models could be described as transitional, 2915-3, 105.002-62, 145.022-69 (pre moon back), but only one model is called the Transitional, and that's the '68.
