Will the DSOTM ever become a classic? How do you see its value evolving?

If I had 10 k ... I would get a decent 105.003 for 7-8 k and get 145.022 69 or 7x ...for 2-3 k ...

10k for those two is extremely optimistic in this market.

but as it's such a big seller, it's doubtful that this would happen

It would be interesting to find out just how many they actually produced, in the 15 months i've worn mine i've seen a few in the ADs but none on anyone elses wrist.

I've seen a couple on wrists. In The UK they've been quite popular I'd say but only as popular as other models in the range. The thing is, would a standard moonwatch ever increase in value, other than the RRP increasing massively to boost used values over time? Doubtful. Same with the DSOTM in my opinion. As nice as it is, which it really is, it's a normal production run.

Does anyone know how many DSOTM models are produced each year? I love my Grey side but really want the original with deployant clasp. I also want the Black Black. The whole series really do underperform in front of a camera. Put one on the wrist and boy do they come alive.

Rolex watches hold their value so much better for whatever reason it may be but I am not buying watches in hopes of making money on them so I buy what I want at that particular time. I bought my RLX 16610 date black bezel in 2006. It doesn't have the engraving like some other z serial 2006 models but I could get my money back out of it today if tried hard enough. It wasn't babied either. I wore it for stretches of time without even considering taking it off. But even as a daily beater of at least 7-8 years it held up well enough to get my money back out of it. I don't know the circumstances why it sells for its current going rate. Like if it not being engraved adds, or detracts, from it since a lot of z's have the engraving or if it's the other way around. It's the last model that all watches werent engraved and it just happens to be one of those.

Buying vintage is and has proved to be the safest avenue for collectors which worry about any returns on their watches. Some people can make an educated guess based off many variables but if it doesn't sing to you it will sit tucked away and never get used. Playing the stocks, precious metals game, or even real estate would be far more rewarding in most cases as long as get out when it's time to get out.

New watches that aren't limited edition or short supply are extremely hard to pick in terms of collectibility. I hope I never talk myself into purchasing a new watch for any other reason than the love of wearing it. I'd be sucked in and need help because I don't have any secrect pages from Nostradamus referring to the watch world of the 21st/22nd centuries.

Very interesting comments guys. I have to admit I haven't thought about some of the aspects mentioned.

I do emphasize that I was not referring to "investing" as in making money out of it (or even selling it for the same value after a short period). I was mostly worried about losing a lot of value in a short period, as for instance, happens with electronics.

The main use for the watch would be simply to enjoy it. In that sense, I know there are better alternatives from a purely financial perspective, but I don't find them as attractive in style (this part is of course subjective).

I'd guess that the main concern was even more psychological than practical. It's very unlikely I'd need to sell it, but it would feel better to think it didn't lose much value. Maybe going to an AD window and looking at retail prices now and then can help. :-P

One thing that turns me off a bit with the Omega offerings is the large amount of variations they have. There are tons of Speedmasters out there and already 5 DSoTM versions. I don't know the market that well, but that probably dilutes value considerable. Still, some strategist leading the product line thinks that is the way to go...

Have you thought about the meteorite speedy? Def unique and not so much run of the mill industrial watch (well sort of)... that should do well in the long run

I don't believe in appreciation of the watch which essentially made from reinforced glass.
Chances are that it'll just not be alive after 20 years.

I dont think so ... there are a few ceramics watches out there for quite some decades (but come to think of it, not sure many sports watches)... and I assume the 2016 ceramics are better than the 1980ies ceramics to begin with.

So tecnically I am a believer, not so much commercially ... just image-google "ceramic knife alibaba" and imagine they start offering cheap ceramic cases produced in china 😎

Houses, classic cars, artworks, vintage watches - all things that are best bought to enjoy the seeking/owning/cherishing processes, not as financial investments. Paradoxically, I believe that if you buy on this basis you feel more relaxed about having spent the money, and, importantly, there's an inbuilt tendency to want to pass stuff on to your kids: heirlooms in a family are precious, especially as it's a 'thing' that can't be artificially manufactured/bought in.

The DS will never appreciate in value. I picked up one approx 2 months after the UK launch from what I call a watch broker (others call Grey Market dealers) for £4500.00, 40% off RRP. A depreciating asset with ample supply does not increase in value.

Right. No one has ever made money in real estate.

A house is most people's largest investment.

One thing to add: Movements are getting more important these days. OMEGA is in a transitional state now with all its technologies (magnetism) and methods (Metas). The movement of any OMEGA bought now is outdated in two years max. I think this will get to a rest in the next two years. So if you can wait, wait.

Wait ! I Must really Wait ? Why must i reject the advances of Beautiful Charming Handsome Dashing Timepiece when it is whispering Sweet Nothings into my ear ? Should i say Sorry & Say to Him
"i like You but i'm waiting for that SomeOne very Special ? " You forget Ladies Have Biological Clocks ..ticking for a Limited Time only !

Billy blue is singing the Blues when he hopes For Mechanical Watches with built In Anti Gravity NASA approved Radar with on coming Bullet Detection Technology with 'Halal' Pork Free Certificates ?
Hey ! Maybe my future watch needs a CRT-D ( Cardiac ReSynchronization Therapy with CardioVerter Defibrillator ) to jumpstart my heart in case it stops ?

BillyBlue Darling ,
1 ) People see timepieces as MasterClass collectables Works of Arts
2 ) Timepieces symbolizes Aspirational Contemporary Lifestyles . Think James Bond's Skyfall & Spectre ! They are also created to celebrate & pay homage to Vintage Classics. Aesthetically Pleasing Timepieces are more important to me than " implanting The High Tech Crap "

I've seen plenty of women with hands that size out in Thailand, they all had matching adams apples as well
