Will omega make a haselite-shaped sapphire crystal for the speedmaster?

Doxa recently reissued the original sub 300 watch with a sapphire crystal shaped like an acrylic haselite crystal. The tech is now quite feasible and other manufacturers are starting to adopt similar glass.

What do you guys think the odds are omega will offer a speedy with a baseline looking sapphire?

I think they already do. The sapphire sandwich Speedy has a raised crystal shaped like the hesalite one.

They would have to redesign the case as the current one results in that giant milky ring around the dial. Something similar to the crystal on the Oris Sixty-Five would be a very good replacement to the hesalite (but hesalite is still way cooler).

Is there a sandwich model identical to the regular moonwatch?

And I dont need a display back either. Identical looks to the original, just tougher materials is what I would think to be a good idea.

The sapphire model is identical, except for the caseback. I don't think it's available without a display back. The current version is here:

Not sure if that's what the OP is referring to, but the curve on the Sapphire is definitely more pronounced than the Hesalite.
From another thread on here. Sapphire left, Hesalite right:

And of course the milky ring...

Not all Speedmaster sapphire crystals have the milky ring, some have a more boxy profile than others, those show it worst.

I always thought it was a limitation of sapphire until I handled an Oris 65. I wish Omega would mimic the very same hesalite curve with sapphire. Omega certainly has the know how.

I expect that a redesign of the crystal would require recertification for manned space flight from NASA, so it’s very unlikely that Omega would take that risk.

It’s not the sapphire version NASA use or have used so certification doesn’t come into it. That’s not to say that they don’t use sapphire crystal watches (think X-33) but not ever AFAIK for EVA.

Sorry, my bad. I misread the original post to mean whether Omega would ever do away with the hesalite version altogether and replace it with a hesalite shaped sapphire crystal.

A hesalite-shaped sapphire (like, domed) is possible but omega probably won't do it because it's too expensive. They did it for the SM300 trilogy and said it was very expensive

As opposed to the price of the watch at retail?

Doxa puts one on a $2000 watch, fwiw.

So do they make two Speedmasters one with Hesalite and one with a curved Sapphire. Or do they have to make a watch to fit both.

I can see your request has some difficulty in Omega doing this.

I myself prefer the Hesalite.

I'm all about history and such. But after owning both a hesilite and sapphire speedmaster. I much prefer the sapphire for durability and heft. I'm sure they have the technology to do so. For example, Patek was able to make a box sapphire crystal

I can live with haselite, but it's not my preference for a sports watch.

I looked at the prices of the sapphire crystals for the SM300 trilogy, and the sapphire Speedy Pro.

The Speedy Pro crystal is 4.8 times the price of the SM300 trilogy crystal, so I don't know who said it was "very expensive" but I would take that information with a large grain of salt.

Omega really should do this. It would look awesome, and it really is time. For those that prefer the rounded look of the hesalite, but aren't planning to blast off into orbit any time soon, and don't want to deal with buying a tube of goo and removing scratches from the crystal of their multi-thousand dollar watch from time to time, this would be a great and attractive option to have.

You mean something other than the domed sapphire they already have?
