Why we are happy when a watch stays in the OF family

I don't care where a watch has been before I buy it... and I couldn't care less what happens to it after it leaves my possession.
The posts in this thread are amusing to say the least!!!!

I thought about coming up with a pertinent reply for you, but I decided it would be a waste of time after seeing your other comments.
I guess you find it amusing when people here invest time and research in a piece, offer it for sale to other collectors at a reasonable price, only to have it for sale by a dealer at double the price.
I don't care about your collecting strategy, but calling posts here amusing is a lack of respect. Certainly not your first time.

Why? It's his watch, his sales advert… If he doesn't care where his watch ends up, why should anyone else? 😕

I have a different perspective to oinkitt, but surely he is allowed to have his?

But would you buy a watch on OF to make a profit somewhere else?

If I wanted to, why not? There is nothing special about the OF.

Sorry, only now did I realise it came out wrong. All I wanted was for him to be a tad more courteous, he is obviously allowed to have his opinion, but calling all of this amusing is a bit too much, IMHO.

It's exactly nothing, much to your disappointment. You're free to have your own opinions, like anyone else here. I honestly hope this was not an inflammatory comment, but if it was, you're going to have to try better than that.

dull?

But it is good to know who not to sell to. At least, not at a good price ^^

TBH, it happened to me once to buy a watch and put it for sale above the price I paid, nearly as soon as I received it... Now to give a bit of context: it was brand new from a kickstarter, I did not like it as mush as I expected and could not return it. The retail price was still around 200€ (20%) above what I was asking + watch was available on the webshop of the brand. and I knew people will try to lower the price even if I ask the "kickstarter" price. The target was to try to not lose money.
In the end, I sold the watch to a guy who knew perfectly the model and wanted this exact color as a few weeks before, her twin sister reached the South Pole. He was genuinely passionate about the watch and this SP exploration. As expected he made an counter-offer, and I accepted it. I lost something like 50€ in the whole process, but made someone happy. Small loss for me, but not a bad deal when looking at the overall picture.

I have never bought anything off the forum and I've never looked at the sales threads.

I highly doubt you would have anything I would consider interesting!!

So.… I couldn't care less if you didn't want to sell me anything!!

Well, some must be taken care of, but let's say the date range of the watches I have is from 2020 to the Great War.
Now: I won't sell, you won't buy. Glad we reach an agreement! I hope you will be as successful with the other members 👍

Well, there you go, we're a mixed bunch:
- you don't care
- some consider provenance to be everything
- some wanna know where the watch has been, just in case...

The last 3 watches I have sold on OF have been to members with zero posts (or close to,) and were all great transactions. I did have inquiries from dealers on one of the pieces and immediately shut down any deep discount conversation. I found it a bit predatory and annoying to say the least and will never do business with that individual who is also on TRF.

But let's be honest, I have also seen esteemed members here on OF who have bought watches here to turn a profit a few weeks if not months later on this very forum. It's just the nature of the hobby. Heck, I sold a '71 Speedy for a very reasonable price here to an OF member to see the same watch reappear only 2 weeks later for a healthy profit. No skin off my nose, the watch didn't owe me anything and am happy to pay a portion of my profit forward.

You may well be right, especially in some circles but I have a much different experience.

I have said for years that the F/S forum is a problem.

We are (used to be?) a collector's forum and I feel that helping other members find things, upgrading or refocusing your collection or simply moving on pieces that are no longer wanted could be handled by pm or if not, by the many outside sales platforms available.

My how we've grown!

Meanwhile, my son still has not forgiven me for selling the GMT II Coke, which he coveted greatly and prayed to get for his college graduation. Instead, for graduation in 2 weeks he is getting a freshly serviced 3572.50 from his birth year, along with a gold capped Seamaster auto date dress-watch from my birth year. I think the GMT II Coke would have been a better gift, and I regret selling it to a flipper who hid his true identity.

That story with your son is heartbreaking. My dad has an Explorer II that he inherited from his dad before him (never worn by my Grandad as he thought it was too flash for a Vacum cleaner Salesman and son of a bricklayer). I dread the idea that that would be flipped by some profit seeker.

The Speedmaster from his birth year sounds like a beautiful present though. It's the story you tell along with the watch that really adds value. I can imagine that he will treasure it.

You get out what you put in. Apparently you don't put in much...

OF appears to be full of special snowflakes who feel its productive to spend their time worrying if other members make money from things they purchase off the forum or on eBay.

Most of this thread is a BIG virtue signal in my opinion.

Virtues, morals and ethics- they are the cornerstone of a civilization. There are those who want to carry the torch and those who would use it to burn the place to the ground.

Morals and ethics are different that fake virtues.
