Why I Love PolyWatch . . . and Hesalite

I recently acquired this 1971 145.022. The watch arrived in beautiful condition with one exception: there was a deep scratch, almost like a little crater, in the crystal over the 60 minute subdial. I really didn’t want to replace the crystal because it’s the signed original, but I wasn’t sure that any amount of polishing would remove the scratch. Well, after 15 minutes of working the surface with PolyWatch, it’s like I have a new crystal again. This stuff really works. Try that with sapphire, especially AR coated sapphire.

Novus is lots cheaper and does a great job too.
And I have it in all three grades. I use it to polish scratches out of the thermoform acrylic hull on my sea kayak. Never thought about trying it on hesalite watch crystals!

After discovering the magical properties of Polywatch I now seek out watches with acrylic crystals over those with mineral glass or sapphire -- there's nothing quite like shiny plastic 😀

Solvol Autosol chrome cleaner does the job for me. I read somewhere it was originally designed for cleaning perspex on aircraft.

If we’re talking about money saving/products we have on hand, we ought to toss toothpaste into the ring. Works just as well and comes out minty fresh.

Yes, but does the American Dental Association recommend it for off label use? The last thing I need is a bunch of angry dentists knocking on my door. 😲

My daily watch is an Orient with a sapphire crystal and honestly no matter how much I abuse it (I'm an engineer so it's constantly getting knocks) the dial seems to remain pristine! So much so that I was initially hesitant about the idea of a vintage watch with an acrylic crystal! But posts like this make me feel confident that acrylic is easy to maintain (especially if vintage watches are only for "dress" occasions) 😀

I love the carefree nature of a Hesalite crystal, no need to worry if you get a scratch!

I wondered who that was pictured in Scarecrow Boat’s avatar. I had to look up Larry Burrows. Now I know. He was a totally cool guy, and yes, lots of respect for him.

And, just to be true to the topic of this thread, I’ll throw in a quick Hesalite watch photo.

Wow, good spot and I 100% agree. His work and his approach to it was incredible.
To tie this back into watches, Larry Burrows wore a gold Rolex President Day Date on all of his assignments.

I don't have the ability to take a group shot as two of these and some lenses are out for their CLA's, but here is my set. I also don't have that phonebook, but it is on my list! Calling @JwRosenthal

Seems like a good thread to jump in on to share my recent experience in case they help anyone. Had the 2021 Speedy for circa a year before picking up the first scrape yesterday morning. From some web forums you would think you’d be picking up scratches on Hesalite all the time, but even as a daily I’d avoided that happening. Anyway had to get my hand behind a wall mounted flat screen yesterday to access the cables. Forgot to take my watch off and heard the crystal scratch across the drywall. I knew from watching countless hours of YouTube reviews that it should polish up, but still had to put it to the test. Anyway before and after pictures included. Thank goodness for Polywatch.
