You again underestimate his fame in Europe with 450mio inhabitants. Tbh, I knew a lot of guys in the U.S. knowing him and for me it was strange that you guys haven’t heard of him before.
But I like a great many others here on the site aren't in Europe, so it should come as no surprise that some French bloke, no matter how talented or well known he was in Europe 40-60 odd years ago doesn't register much in most of the rest of the world.
You've gotta realise that in the 60's and 70's unless you were in a big city there were NO opportunities at all to see foreign language films, and the opportunities in the big cities were few and far between as there a few but not very many arty-farty cinemas showing foreign films. TV here in Oz in those days never showed such things. and I would say the same would've been true in many other English speaking countries.
I may well of seen this bloke in some film or another but if I did, obviously I didn't care enough to bother remembering

There are probably a huge number of people in Asia and Africa etc. who have absolutely no idea who the likes of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Sean Connery etc. are or were, but the average demographic (my guesstimate) of this forum is mostly English speaking, educated, blokes with some wealth and are of a certain older generational age grouping (allowing for some exceptions and welcome they are too) will know who these people are.

When some seemingly random name is thrown into the mix it would be helpful if there was a line or two to put the aforementioned name into context and help generate interest otherwise for all we know it could just be the name of some bloke that you know down the pub!

Bill Murray is cooler than Steve McQueen as well.

Well either Watch my Whisky has the wrong pic or ol' Bill Murray has gone from being the old looking scrotesque dried arrangement that he was last time I saw a pic of him to some curly haired fella that looks like he might be a bit light on his feet.....the wonders of cosmetic surgery eh?
I suspect that Watch my Whisky might be doing a piss take!

And I have absolutely no idea who the random old bloke in pdxleaf's post is

People all over the world knew/know who Muhammad Ali is.
The most recognisable face on the planet at the time.
He's not my favourite boxer, or even my favourite American heavyweight but he was a man loaded with charisma.

A great actor! I'm old enough to remember Jeff Bridges in Sea Hunt. The 2nd season of The Old Man just started.

I'm aware. Both Jeff and Bo were in the occasional show with their father.
