Hammered at £200 today. Add commission and more like £245. Estimate was 80-150

Good-looking specimen with original crown - was it a Patent Pending case?

It had a turtle back wave case. Would it be plain if patent pending?

Love it. A " Burton". So christened because the actor Richard Burton owned one. Apparently Omega and Certina were his favourite brands. A man of taste and a fellow native of Wales.

What a marvelous detail. I wonder if we can find any images of Burton with one of these (or another Certina) on his wrist . . .

Love this! The "Burton" indeed 👍 In an odd coincidence, I was just about to watch "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" with my partner. Given that we're both academics, it seems wholly appropriate.

Turns out I really like DS-2. Chunky and funky but not too big and crazy. So I had to get another. And I gotta say, the case on this specimen is pretty damn sharp!

I don't know what to call this patina pattern. A blizzard? Or sleet? 😁

31000L = 31k Italian Liras. Any idea of the year of this exact DS2? Would be nice to understand for context average salary in Italy back then.

Great piece, gratz!

Certina serial number database puts his serial at about 1970. (8,101,70?)

Thanks
Few websites say a blue collar salary in Italy in 1970 was about 120 000~ Liras.

Based on the Measuring Worth website, 31,000 Lira was about US$50 in 1970. Here are figures on current value:

Interesting. So not a cheap watch by any means. For comparison in 1969 an Omega SM Cosmic cost $330 in current value so DS-2 was slightly more expensive. Pretty tough competition for Certina in that price bracket! And very similar selling points with durability and modern aesthetics, too. Must have been a though choice for many customers. In think Cosmic is the better looking watch but DS-2 is more fun and of course double secured. Luckily we live in the future now so we don't have to think rationally and choose only one watch for daily use. Instead we can hoard all the lovely vintage specimens our heart's desire.

More like salt water, but I get the idea.

I think a lot of these DS2's got used pretty hard and spent time in salt water, indeed.

Congrats! Do post a pic when you're of a mind to.

My Certina DS that cost me less than 200 USD. Manual wind caliber 25-36. Based on serial number the watch is from 1964.

I appreciate this golden patina that many old DS watches develop 😀

After service performance is acceptable 😉
