Speaking of 911s launch of the new one is happen right now live on YouTube.

So the hybrid system is only on the GTS, and involves a whole new motor with an electric turbo, effectively like an MGU-H from F1, so the turbo can be spooled using electric power instantly feeding a 3.6 litre engine. Then a 45kw electric motor is inside the PDK transmission with a lightweight 1.9kwh battery powering it. Energy is recovered both through regen and via the turbo.

It’s definitely incredibly quick and given that under hard acceleration it is effectively electrically supercharged rather than turbocharged it will have no lag, but the hybrid system being woven into the turbo to strip excess energy when at full boost likely means it will be vastly more complicated to tune than normal turbos and upgrading or replacing the turbo will probably cost a fortune. It might be that a tuned S is still the quicker car as a result as you probably void any warranty on that hybrid system the moment you’re pushing boost out of spec, even IF it can be tuned.

Interesting that it's back up to a 3.6 too. Who needs more boost when the new hybrid GTS is putting out 541 hp. Used to be a couple generations until the non-Turbo cars caught up to the power levels of the big man.

Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the grille treatment on the 992s and this is no improvement. But we'll see what the Sport Design fascia looks like. Sounds like the configurator should be up and running shortly!

Couple of more bits of info, the new engine sits 11cm lower than the old engine which is pretty impressive. There is no starter as the e-motor does that, and no accessory belt, the water pump is piggy backed off the oil pump drive mechanism, also it’s the first single turbo 911 since the 964, and pdk only, no manual option.

Also zero parts carry over from 9A1/9A2 to the new engine as it’s a clean sheet design so they claim.

The engineering/tech in this new setup is rather impressive to say the least, reinventing the wheel again.

The physical tacho being replaced by a digital dash is a bit of a sad choice, Porsche being mean with cost savings isn’t exactly a new thing but that’s hard to not see as a downgrade. Apparently the only colors you can choose without paying extra are black and white too, even guards red is now an option at nearly $2k.

The dash and controls are so sad. And the mini-shifter, too 🙁

The power and handling are a blast, I'm sure. But the cabin interior is distracting versus helping one focus on the driving experience.

Probably sour grapes on my part. But happily my '87 is going to return to the road in another couple of weeks. Digital dash? Sure -- it's in the same place they put the power steering.

I just saw a new Z in our village - looks fantastic!

I used to have a 240. Ran great, but took me weeks to figure out where the exhaust fumes were getting sucked back into the cabin.

I was (am) a big Arrested Development fan, and when CA called my bluff and approved this license plate (which I didn't expect them too - but "explained" to them I am an amateur astronomer), I had to drive around like this...

I think the digital dash is a sad break from tradition but definitely an upgrade going forward. The configurable dashes that VAG puts out are all really great-looking anyway.

What's terrible is the colors. For a car starting at $120k in the US to only be able to spec white or black without paying extra is bullshit.

Post pictures, not links 😉

This thing is gorgeous.

Looks stunning. I think it’s a winner. Not convinced on the new colours yet, but a couple of the greys look pretty good in the configuration

So a white or black car will mark you as a tightarse who wouldn't or couldn't buy above the poverty pack!
As for the grey pictured, it looks like they didn't bother with the colour and just left it in primer

Yeah, on the one hand it might increase the number of boring white or black 911s out there which would be a tragedy.
OTOH, it's very well known at this point that having a cool color raises resale value so maybe the types who buy a new 911 every couple of years will go with better colors, and paying a bit extra for one might not be so bad.

OK, so what do I drive? Well when it's working I drive a Malone Skunk. But invariably, for one reason or another it isn't working. And that should explain my username.
If you Google "Malone Skunk" and select images, the very fist picture should be of my car, with me in it and a dis-interested and very newly wed Mrs Broken in the background, looking through a window at the tables for our wedding breakfast.

That thing looks an absolute hoot!

I added the pic for you, because threads need pix...not damned links

The other sad thing, here’s the new push button start (top) compared to the old 992.1’s fixed key start and nice buttons (bottom). It looks like something off a Toyota Hilux, not a 911.
