Which would you choose Speedmaster 57 or FOIS

If you have the 3861, then 57 gives you something a little different.
I was thinking that

I can't find one
You'll probably have a tough time finding one in Canada at an AD or boutique, there is one on C24 at the present time. I had to go to Eastern Europe for mine in 2022, but I got one. It's too bad that after almost six years of production most people can't easily access one from a dealer, too much like the Daytona.

Out of the two choices given, I would choose the FOIS, but I'd much prefer the Ed white or a regular moon watch over either of them.

I have the Moonwatch and the Ed White is too close to the Moonwatch that I can't justify the money they are asking. I feel (but I could be wrong) the FOIS is difference enough to own both. The 57 is definitely different enough.

TBH, I have both, they are sooo different watches (EW and MW) once you have one.

Agree, I have both but they are totally different watches. A lot of people will get a 3861 and then go for a FOIS thinking it's close enough to an EW. Then, they'll get a white dial 3861 for variation, boom, the FOIS and white dial cost more than an EW. Should have gone for a 3861 + Ed White, done.

I really appreciate everyone's input in helping me make my second Speedmaster decision. So, to update, I went into my AD today and they had a blue and green 57 and both FOIS models, one on bracelet and one on strap. I first tried on the FOIS and I loved the look, but legibility is very, very bad. In bright light only 2 sub dials were readable and I found that I was always tipping my arm so I could see the time. Now, I know that reading the time on a watch today is it's second function (looking great being it's first), but I think for the price of these things, legibility should be a given. However, beautiful looking watch, no question.

I then tried the 57 in green. Ignoring the history and looking at this watch just on an aesthetics bases, this watch is amazing. The only critique I can give this watch is it only has 2 sub registers. I would prefer 3 but it isn't a deal breaker. However, the look of the 57 is class for sure. Also it is noticeably bigger on my wrist which I really like. The FOIS was marginal ( I have 7.5" wrist).

So for me I think I will go 57. It is a watch that really surprised me.

"Thinking" about getting the 57 means you aren't 100% sure. Make sure you are 100% sold on the 57. How about the white dial 3861?

… conclusio: Take the more expensive 321 SS and safe some money somewhere else!

This is what I think makes sense for you.

I do love the white dial, but I have the black dial so the only thing that is different is the dial. Not enough for me to spend that kind of money

I'm quite partial to the green dial. I think it's the one I'd go for if I was in the market for a '57.

Yeah you mentioned further up 😁 but even if you hadn’t, the green would still be the one I’d mention myself (alongside the standard).

Green is currently in vogue now, but I doubt it will last. A green dialled watch can become tomorrow's Edsel.

Why do you think black, blue, and white/silver are so much more easy for people to accept? Curious what your thought on this is.

I have no real knowledge about this, but some colors are just more acceptable. Look at cars, popular colors are white, silver and black. Blue sometimes, but rarely are green cars popular. Red and yellow look great on particular models, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Corvette and sports oriented models, but you don't see red or yellow minivans driven by soccer moms. Lots of white, gray and beige houses, some with black trim, but a green colored house, nope. Even in fashion green is not very popular. I would be very hard pressed to shell out $10k on a green dialled watch. I had a Tokyo 2020 stee!/Sedna gold with the green bezel which was the only green on the watch, but it was just odd enough that I wasn't choosing it very often, so traded it in last year. As always it's a personal choice, but the long term wearability of a green watch needs to be considered.
