Which One Should I Buy?

It's a toss up between the Rolex DRSD and 6239 Daytona and I can only afford to buy one at the moment. Both watches are close in value but I am not sure which one is rarer.

If you were in my shoes, which one would you buy? Your thoughts are highly appreciated. Thanks.

What size shoe do you wear? 馃槣

I wouldn't buy either. For that kind of money I'd be in the JLC boutique.

Personally? That would be really difficult. I feel like the 6239 would wear better (be more daily-able, if you will), but the DRSD may have more character (beautiful dial patina on that). Tough call. What's your gut leaning towards?

The 6239 has dark plot, i don t like them. At this price, i need a very nice Dial at least.

You need to do a lot more research if you are going to drop that kind of coin. Am I the only one who has never seen a black bezel on a 6239? I am also not sure about that dial. Certainly it is not from the year shown in the ad. And what is going on with the bottom pusher? Others who are more knowledgeable should chime in here.

I'm leaning towards the 6239 maybe because I already have a 5513 and a 1680 red sub. I only have one Daytona which I bought new in 1998, a white dial 16520. Of course, the DRSD is still a watch to reckon with.

I wouldn't buy this kind of watch on the net, you need to see them in real. The best place to get advice would be VRF.
Good luck.

I have spoken to the DRSD seller who has agreed for us to meet in LA and bring the watch to a Rolex Center . I will pay only after authentication. I have also emailed the 6239 seller and requested the same conditions.

Also, the bezel looks to have been touched up (photoshop or with paint) in the 80-85 area, and the sub-dial at 9 looks odd...too much going on with that one to think of buying.

Out of the 3 posted the DRSD is the one I would be most interested in.

Given your recent bad experience with the 5513, I will second the suggestion of heading to the vintage rolex forum. Also, there is a current thread on this forum that demonstrates that very expensive vintage watches are a risky proposition, even from established dealers. You have to do your homework.
Caveat emptor.

I agree and the DRSD dial has a lovely patina. What do you think of the other Daytona with the stainless steel bezel?

Is bringing the watch to a Rolex Center for authentication before payment any assurance? As for the 5513, my friend refunded my money after explaining to him about the replaced dial, hands and bezel without a fuzz. Actually he was happy to get the watch back which he has worn everyday for 15 years.

for this bunch of cash I would spent a day in the Boutique and have a few bottles of champagne...and buy several Omegas.

Honestly....it's too much money to spent on something I can't crab after giving the money

Ask John Mayer*. He also liked buying daytonas that had a questionable/controversial history. Now he's suing the dealer after Rolex found issue with the watches. No matter how much money you may have, no one likes flushing it down the toilet. Do not rely on Rolex. At these prices, YOU need to know these watches inside and out. Go to the VRF and get advice there. I remember John didn't like the advice given to him on that forum...

If you can afford to spend that kind of money without adequate research or knowledge, then don't worry. Otherwise, the thought of just jumping in on any of these watches seems scary to me. I would be a lot more patient and build up some expertise, and if you are not going that route than maybe pay a little bit of a premium and buy from a dealer with a good reputation that will stand behind the watch. As to verification at the RSC, I tried that once (ironically with a 6239) and they were not willing to commit in any way. Not sure what their present policy is. And on a totally separate note, those watches are so different that you may want to give some serious thought as to what you are looking for before opening your wallet.

I prefer the 6263 with the black dial! I did see a really perfect red sea dweller in the shop window of a vintage watch shop in paris, i didn't dare ask the price. When you are talking about spending 30k you don't want to make a mistake!
