Good morning,

I'm between two vintage Omegas

  1. Constellation Ref. 168017 Cal.564

  1. Seamaster Cosmic Ref. / Ref. 166.045TOOL107 cal. 565

The Constellation was serviced in December, it has the original crystal and buckle but from what I can see it has a slightly more worn dial with small dots in some places. Design by Genta.

The Cosmic appears to be in mint condition for its age with some wear on the hands. It has the original crystal. According to the seller, who is a professional shop not an individual, no restoration has been made.

From the research I did, the difference between the 564 and 565 is that the 564 is chronometer certified with 5 positions in the setting.

So ... what to go for ? Better calibre and serviced but more worn dial or dial in great condition but with a calibre that currently runs 17/s per day loss but zero beat error?

They’re two very different watches and without pictures it’s impossible to give an option as to which is better.

Overall;
1. Decide which model/ref you prefer and seek out a good example of that. Don’t just choose between the small number a particular dealer currently has on offer.
2. Condition, condition, condition.

We need better pictures. That C-case looks very polished to me and as you mentioned the dial looks rough.

So it should not be that polished towards tampered to original design ?

I hope this photo helps

Yea that case is extremely polished. The top and sides of the case should be a brushed surface but they’ve been polished to a shine. Hard pass even at a much lower price.

Thank you .... information you dont have is priceless.

Any thoughts on the Seamaster Cosmic with the cal. 565? I love how the dial looks ... how many things are there to look at ... but I dont see too much information about it on the web. Not so loved ... for a reason ?

I really like the look of it too. So much to look on the dial and that space age of the 60s look gives it character in my eyes.

The owner told me that it rund runs with a 17/s per day loss but 0 beat error.

Is there some reason in the vintage watch community that I don't find any information about it ?

As already mentioned, the Constellation is heavily polished and does not resemble the original finish at all, the dial appears to be very dirty, and for these reasons I would not buy this one. The cosmic appears to be in good original condition and therefore is the better of the two, by a long shot. It's also a good looking watch.

The Constellation is not in good condition and the style of the Cosmic does not appeal to me. So personally, I would pass on both of them. Very subjective, obviously.

Does it wear on the wrist? Because it has that irregular case.

What is your about the one I am in offered that the case is not c shaped but round ? It does not have the metal cuts at the top of the case

The Constellation is a hard pass, as others have said. Lots of better ones around.

If you like Cosmics (personal taste), that seems a good one if the price is right.

Wears good.

The one you pictured is just another variant of the Cosmic.

The dial is what you see every time you look at the watch… as mint as possible is best. I would take the cosmic.

I've had both styles of COSMIC and they wear about the same, nice fit on my 7-1/4 inch wrist and about essentially the same as a C-case Constellation.

My first vintage Omega was a COSMIC. As others have noted condition is paramount, I'd take a less that perfect case with a great dial before the other way around.
