To me it looks like a typical character from Italian comics Dylan Dog ...but good luck with your research 😀
I bet there is a dark story behind that avatar and maybe that is why your student don't want you to know what crazy thing are popping through his head

Ask your son “where is the math below” 😉

It's in the trees; it's in the turbulence of the water; it's in the atmosphere... it's everywhere in nature.

Style is late 70's early 80's ... I was going to guess Crumb, but I do not think it is him.

I’m sue I’ve seen him somewhere before...

I think perhaps he was wearing a watch with a logo that looked something like this:

I asked my son if maybe it was a character out of a video game.
He said he didn't recognize it.

I modified the picture a little bit so that only the face was in it.

A google image search on this modified image says it might be Street Art of some kind.

When in doubt I ask my kids...
Youngest says the image is from a Japanese manga, basically a comic book or graphic novel.
My eldest a phd candidate in mathematics, specializing in analysis and number theory, looked at the image and said..."I have no idea." However, he wholeheartedly agrees that math is indeed everywhere... just consider the golden ratio, also known as the golden mean or the divine proportion.
Does your kid remember the name of the Japanese manga?

PhD in math huh? Your son deserved a lot of respect. Higher level math classes are difficult to say the least. I have a master of science degree in Math. Never took number theory classes, but I took up to Abstract Algebra 2 (Algebra) and Measure Theory (Analysis).

Learned beautiful things, but it was very tough for me.

One thing that comes to mind is the velocity profile that requires you to mend your line as the fly drifts downstream. 😀

I was going to say manga as well from the style. Considering the hundreds of thousands of choices there I'd say it's likely the proverbial needle in a haystack. And if it is from one of the more racy ones, could be why he doesn't want to say.

Got the answer- it is Japanese Hentai- basically this is animated porn. This student might as well have used John Holmes as his avatar

I wonder if your student knows that there is an infinite supply of real porn on the internet. I am less concerned that his avatar is porn-related and more concerned that his tastes run towards cartoon drawings of sweaty fat men.
It's a thing- there is a a whole cult of people, young and old, who follow this type of anime. I remember art house theaters in San Francisco back in the early 90's featuring Japanese anime. A friend dragged me to one and I was really disturbed by it- it wasn't the porn aspect that troubled me (not a prude) but it was violent and gory- almost like a snuff film- very dark stuff.

I also believe it is from a manga cartoon... It looks familiar to me, so probably from around the 90's when I was watching some of them.
