When did the meaning of “good” change?

Looking at his other IG photos, I'd change his post to say: "when the case size is this good for my wrist who cares if the crown is replaced".

This is the grading guide from Discogs for ‘Good’ when referring to records, CDs and tapes. Very Good, Very Good Plus, Near Mint and Mint all sit above Good, while Poor refers to something worth 5-10% of a Mint version:

‘Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
Vinyl
Generally worth 10-15% of the Near Mint value. A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be played through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise, scratches, and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, or other defects will be present. While the record will be playable without skipping, noticeable surface noise and "ticks" will almost certainly accompany the playback.

CD
There are a lot of scuffs/scratches. However it will still play through without problems. This has not been handled with much care at all.

Insert/Inlay/Booklet/Sleeve/Digipak: Well worn, marked, more obvious indentations, fading, writing, than a VG - possibly a more significant tear/rip.

Cassette
Sleeve will be well worn, marked, and contain obvious indentations, fading, and/or writing, more so than a VG grade - possibly a more significant tear/rip. Tape will have heavy wear on shell. Felt stopper may be missing. Tape may have minor creasing, but not broken. Must play through, may have heavier degradation that will overpower music.’

So maybe his concept of a Good description was taken from here...

So a bit like coin collector grades, where "good" means set on a rail and run over by a train.

Did they change the meaning of good?

Yes, at the same time they invented the #hashtag 😉

I work near Somlo, and I’m glad that there are people who keep them in business, so I can keep looking at some of the beautiful stuff they have in there.

Would I buy from them? No, and it isn’t because I don’t like them, or think they’re suspect in any way. It’s just that the prices must inevitably reflect being in pretty much one of most expensive pieces of real estate in the world.

I’m not glad that anyone paid a premium for this watch.

What's a hashtag?

I think "good", "rare", "antique", "collectible", lost their meaning about the same time people discovered ebay for getting rid of the crap around their houses.

Hi all,
Wow I just can't believe how harsh all of you are, 😉 I mean after all this is an ultra rare watch that has been carefully authenticated and lovingly prepared by none other then Somlo and you all know they are simply the best at everything. It most probably cost at least 25% or nearer 50% more than other examples that you could find and Somlo told him just how good it was whilst swiping his Credit Card so it must be true.

Just for clarification I have been to Somlo a few times whilst passing through the area as they are always able to provide a good laugh by me enquiring just how much a watch is and trying to understand how a watch is still called original and command such a high price whilst sporting obvious service parts. Unfortunately some people seem to equate stupidly high prices to mean a guarantee of quality which I'm sure most of us realise isn't the case at all.

There are a stack of people who judge everything on price, either positively or negatively.

I popped in there a while back when I saw a 2998-4 in the window. I didn't think the price was too bad considering it had a set of gen 6s and a flat link bracelet.

I was semi interested until he told me the 6s and incorrect 1035 could be added for another £5k.

Took a while to get there, but worth the journey 😀

Hm.
I mean, whatever floats their boat, right?
Personally I think they're just trying to justify their expenditure by getting people to give him good comments. That'll make him feel better.Although I don't know how anyone would feel better looking at that dial and not get the feeling that their wallet feels much lighter than before.

I get the impression that the Universe will suffer heat death before that wallet loses too much mass...….

I'm a great fan of photos of vintage watches with shoes in the background. Some great pictures to find in the link above 😁

I’ve met Mr Practical Time, he’s a super nice fellow. I agree that “good” was a poor choice of words, but vast majority of comments that accompany Instagram watch photos are banal, I tend to ignore them.
