Even if you didn't know anything about the reference, the condition of the case alone would make one think twice about this watch.

So true. First thing that popped out for me. I mean, an unpolished 2998 is a unicorn, but you can still find em thick and evem at least. That lower right lug looks downright asymmetric/twisted!

I think that bottom right lug is ok, but light is playing tricks. Zoom way in...

I stand corrected. 👍

Where to start. With the obiously wrong dial? Whatever it is (service relumed or just later than the Reference), the absence of an oval "O" and the subcounter indices is enough to tell what it's not.
Your over thinking it. Dome dial.

Drop S also means a 78-mid 80’s service dial

..the bezel was still occupying all my cognitive capabilities while looking at the dial.

It’s interesting to see what everyone looks at first. 😀

..and I am still waiting for our novice expert to chime in..but he keeps away from base 1000 threads out of fear someone might notice he has been banned twice before 😀

I hadn’t even noticed it was a dome dial! Assumed it was a step

if it's a service dial, it could be baked rather than relumed... not that a baked service dial is any better than relumed service dial.. 😁

..and I dare to say the Bezel was made in Germany in the late 2010's.
For comparison, pick random things or the font thickness.

In all fairness, the OP base1000 bezel is a style 1 dot over ninety. Your example is a base 1000 style 2 dot not quite over ninety.

I don’t think there is a question that it’s a Domed replacement dial from 78- mid 80’s based on the speedmaster font. Why do you think it’s baked?

Lume is consistent to that period imho.

I was assuming it was a more modern SL dial. I didn't know they made pre pro Service dials I'm the era of tritium

Ah, must've skimmed over oddboy's post and didn't realize. I'm down for a road (time) trip to pick up some additional Speedies. 😁

Aren’t the edges of some of the numbers always a little cut off on the vintage bezels?
I don’t have any personal experience with these 1000 bezels, so I have no idea if it’s applicable to them.

(This is my oldest Speedy, sadly not old enough to have or need a 1000 scale bezel.)

Another example, from another not-1000 bezel.

If so, the margins on this bezel may make it suspect after all.

I don't think numbers being cut off is not a necessary feature of vintage bezels.

A 2998-4 I once had, long ago...
