I also size my watches for being closer to the hand like OP. Its never super tight though so I could move it away from my hand too but it naturally falls closer to my hand and feels more natural there.
The only time i notice issues with wrist articulation is if I'm doing a push-up or something... otherwise I never have an issue with it.
If i wear my watch farther from my hand, its actually more annoying because the tendon on the inside of my forearm pushes against the watch whenever I try to grip something.
