There have been a few comments about having Omega give a Swatch x Speedmaster away as a gift or freebie, maybe if they bought a real Speedmaster or some other watch.. Swatch does not allow this, or at least they didn't in the past. Back in the late 80's I had a pretty good relationship with a couple of Guebelin managers in their Luzern store. They had the idea that if someone bought a nice watch they would offer a Swatch watch as a gift, maybe for one of their kids. Swatch heard about that and came down hard on them, "Swatch's are NOT cheap trinkets to give away, they must be sold at the current price", was the Swatch stance. It makes sense, no one wants their commercial product to be viewed as a trinket to be tossed in with a sale of a more expensive item. I don't know if they have changed their policy but knowing the Swiss I doubt it.

So you want a free Swatch or a chance to buy one when you buy a Real Speedmaster 😒

These are plastic watches that are sold at Swatch and not Omega. It’s a fun thing for Swatch customers and a marketing plan to sell more swatch watches.

So are you a real fan of SWATCH or Omega

I’m a fan of the Speedmaster and it’s been on my list for a while. I also work in an environment that’s not great for high end watches so I’d like to be able to get the Moonswatch (maybe 2, or 3) without having to travel a thousand miles and camp out for 3 days! I’m getting too old for that!

It's a tool watch and the scratches tell your story haha. You'd cringe if you seen what my SM300 goes thru on a daily basis.

It’s mostly about perception. I can deal with scratches. I have a few other higher end watches (Tudor, Breitling, Oris) that I have taken with me everywhere for years. I agree with you it tells the story.
It’s just not always appropriate to display wealth. I feel the Swatch version would be a great alternative to wear the design I like without the associated price tag!

The average person on the street would have no idea that the Speedmaster Professional was a $6,000+ watch. It doesn't have the bling factor that other luxury watches do.

I get it. Even if you didn’t want scratches I’d understand. I work with a bunch of railroaders and I don’t think a single person has a clue about watches here haha. I think back to my grandfathers and how they each had a nice watch and it never left their wrists. Then again that was back before people collected watches. They had one watch and they wanted quality so it didn’t matter if they were going out to dinner or working manual labor.

For me, this quote from a Fratello review article sums it up:-

"If the MoonSwatch upsets you, I think you’re taking this way too seriously. What it might do, however, is trigger a new (young) audience who will aspire to own the real deal at some point in the future."

Nothing wrong with taking this hobby seriously, also it’s not like Fratello can be taken seriously on any opinions re Swatch group.

Earlier in the thread someone posted this excellent analysis by a blog called « Not so obvious watches ». (Reposting with thanks)

This video says this is the Swatch group fighting to shore up the cheaper ranges of analog watches, just like Swatch is also paying expensive sporting events sponsorships for the Tissot and Hamilton brands. And that the group is fighting as a team, even if it means a choice to redefine luxury. He’s also saying they’re choosing the long game, for the next 20 years.

The video is worth watching.

Frankly I think he’s totally right. This is for the Apple watch crowd, « we went to the Moon and can be just as cool », and make 11 colorful watches, you can’t.

Thanks for this. I had a couple thoughts while watching the video:

- Increasing income inequality, and the wild acceleration of prices on luxury goods in the last couple decades, make "nice things" inaccessible for most people, even in rich countries. All of these high/low collabs are successful because they give ordinary people the option to participate in something that feels like luxury.
- On that last bit: his survey about luxury is very interesting. The finding: for most people, a product is "luxury" if it feels like luxury to them. It is a subjective property, not an objective one. So if the Moonswatch feels special and luxurious to a buyer, then it is a luxury good for them, regardless of the price. Life is hard, cash is tight, and having something like the Moonswatch - nice design, great pedigree, affordable price - scratches that itch for something special. (Looking at it makes me feel that way, hopefully I can cop one next month at the Honolulu store.)

This market for "low-end luxury" is only going to get bigger as Swatch Group and other manufacturers keep raising prices on Omega and other brands above the rate of inflation, leaving people farther behind. There is, and will continue to be, a huge market for affordable, well-designed products with a tie-in to elite goods of different kinds. Marketers take note!

Really should be the "Seaswatcher", to be followed by the "Swatcha Terra" "Swatch Ville", and the "Globeswatcher"
