Does anyone know the current situation regarding people queuing at the London swatch shops? I would like to make the journey in the morning, just rather worried I’ll be to late.
Currently people camping out at Carnaby Street and Oxford street.
No queues at Swatch Edinburgh...

Completely off topic, but if you are camping out near Carnaby, might I suggest you dine at Kolamba on Kingly. Visited the area last December and the food was excellent!

*Compared to it’s actual peers* with similar segment exposure, Swatch Group has actually done pretty well over the past 10 years.

[snip]

To add to this, Swatch Group was already back to 7.3B revenue at the end of 2021. Yea clearly they dont know what theyre doing...

I feel like the booming tech stocks of the last few years have conditioned people to think that level of growth is normal/expected for any publicly traded company..

Maybe uncle Bill would of done a better job than the corporate MBA’s? 0% growth in ten years.

Why don’t Swatch make a killer smart watch for android that can rival Apple? We would see growth like in the 80s, Swatch need to think about what customers spending £100 to £300 really want.

Let’s all remember Omega make some great mechanical watches for a moment. Swatch make great fun and functional watches.

I don't think it's possible for a watch company to rival a technology company when it comes to creating software. They don't have the resources or the expertise.

@alexxs so you went from being a big fan of Omega to cutting ties with them, all over this release? Am I getting that right?

It just seems like such an aggressive stance to take over a collaboration.

It's not the collaboration itself, it's how it contradicts some of the reasons I bought my Speedmaster for. The main attraction for me was how they kept the design and movement as similar as possible to the original one. Even their special editions were cool and had character, their only problem being that they were touted as "limited" when they weren't. That's not a big sin, as the main attributes of the watch and the Speedmaster name were still there. Now they go and essentially say "this plastic toy is also a Speedmaster".

PS: These guys are saying that 90% of Omega buyers (not sure what their source for that is) buy it as a luxury product and are not interested in the horology aspect. If that's true, then this move will hurt them badly.

(...)

2. As for net profits in past 10 years: again, any genuine peak behind the curtain to where Swatch Group’s net profits have declined internally (low end watches, decimated by the rise of smartwatches) vs where profits have increased internally (highest end luxury watches, especially in precious metals) … just like every other luxury watch conglomerate with similar sector exposure … continues to seem disingenuous framing to flatly say “Swatch Group’s profits have cut in half.”

1. Where are its peers? It's a graph only of Swatch Group. Also, 10 years implies 2012-2022 😀 Richemont for example grew quite nicely over the same decade.

2. May I see a source for the internal distribution of revenue and profits between segments?

And there is the difference. This is really what all the nonsense boils down to - opposing opinions on this thing.

An account from a member on another forum I'm on:

"Swung by the Swatch store and got to check them out in the plastic. I was in there for about 15 mins, and there were 5 different people that came by asking for details. Of the 5, only myself and another guy appeared to be enthusiasts, 3 were not. 1 girl came in and asked about this "Omega collab I heard from my friend". So it's definitely bringing in new customers who wouldn't be looking at a Speedy to begin with."

I'm going to lean towards this having a payoff for Omega in the long run.

Time will tell...

A hint of Roger Moore in this comment excellent.

From my perspective the difference between the omega speedsmaster costing £5k + is quite clear with the omega moon swatch costing £200. It’s a bit of fun and I think it’s quite refreshing to start appreciating watches for what it is! Fun and enjoyment.

I just received this reply from Swatch. I wrote the email on the 24th and got a response today.
According to the person who responded to my enquiry, they won't be available on line. I guess only time will tell who is correct.

Here is the reply I received

2022 is obviously not yet in the books, and for your own statement that revenues have “remained flat” it would necessitate a 2010-2020 comparison

2. May I see a source for the internal distribution of revenue and profits between segments?

feel free to pull up Omega’s then Swatch Group’s annual reports, but for a quick and dirty preview through the lens of the entire Swiss watch industry and how quartz vs mechanical have fared in the face of the last 10 years :

and because of Swatch Group’s breadth and distribution of market coverage (looking across not only its brands but also the range of parts manufacturing etc it produces for the broader low-end watch industry), it was far more exposed than other conglomerates that are heavier in jewelry and other hard luxury items

Edit to add RE Swatch Groups part’s etc arms:

You can only try. There were more than 20 people already lining up today, I guess it will depend on stock.

So they are selling more mechanical and less electronic. If Casio are doing ok Swatch need to advertise more or do some instagram stuff or do some movie collabs. These Swatch MBA executives are paid to much for what they don’t deliver, they need to leave Omega alone.

On the other hand Fender American are £1,000 plus the Fender Squire is £150.
