Hello everyone!

What is this?!

JYoYZQI.jpg

I have never seen a black ribbon dial, ever. Is this a very nice redial or some other kind of sorcery?!

Apart from the “M” being a tad close to the “A”, and perhaps the letters not been 100% sharp (although that could be the picture quality), I personally find it hard to spot any of the usual obvious signs of redial. Even the placement of the letters with respect to the ribbon edges is pretty close to legit known examples. Curious to see what the expert think on this one too!

Another vote for a redial.
I also have suspicions those indicies contain radium inserts which have been painted black.

It is really nicely done but indeed the letters are not in the same alignement with the ribbons as in gbesq example …

Should there be serifs? Doesn’t look like it in the photo.

Yes, several of us, including me and PlainVanilla, have a ribbon dialed Seamaster in our respective collections. To my knowledge though, they are all silver dials. Here is my 1961 reference 14761. PlainVanilla has one in gold cap I believe.

Mine is 14K solid gold. 😀

It looks like it reflects light more like onyx or rubber.

+1. Certainly not the worst we've ever seen though.
Agreed. Telltale signs are there, but still pretty well done IMO.

Possibly but think I’ll stick with radium. These types of indices where very common around 1958/59.
It’s speculation on my part but this is how I believe it once looked. The chamfers are there just hard to see against the black dial.

I don't think there are chamfers on the black dialed one but I might be wrong.

Redial then, still a very pretty one. Thank you everyone!
