I am new-ish here and to watches.

I think there is a fine line between worn and abused. Even scratches and minor dings all over a watch can be fine, but a big gouge only on one area is not balanced.

Balanced has a lot to do with it, that goes for dials to me esp. A even speckling all over a dial can look ok, but its just on one half no thank you. The rolex Mkewatch posted above I am fine with, it adds dimension to the dial and can almost look intentional. But the Erax that Dinglem posted, even thou pretty even is well beyond what I would accept.

I got a great deal on this Rolex 1680 because the dealer/friend didn't like the patina in the hands and thought it should be replaced. I bought it immediately because I fell in love with the hands and thought it fit this well-loved example well. Especially when sourcing a faded bezel and the period correct worn 702 crown.

A new addition. Water damage/patina call it what you will but I quite like this look when styled with the vintage workwear that is often my chosen attire.

What do we think of this? Ref. 2802 going at auction w/24 hours left. It’s currently at $1 w/a buyer’s premium of $50.

When considering a purchase of a vintage specimen, what is your threshold for patination?

How much is too much for you? What’s acceptable?

In the past I’ve really valued condition overall, especially with regards to lume and case condition (scratches are fine, I hate polishing).

However, as I venture into different areas of collecting I’ve seemingly adjusted my threshold or tolerance. I enjoy the wabi sabi of a timepiece. Patina shows character and suggests that a timepiece was used—but sometimes abused. But don’t subscribe to the notion that a premium should be placed on patina.

Here’s a potentially new acquisition I’m looking at that might be just a bit too far gone, however, I’ll probably convince myself that it’s not that bad and still end up with it anyhow.

Curious to see examples of heavy patina pieces that you own. Or some that you’re considering or have ultimately passed on because it was just a bit too much.
