What is this?

Opened up this old Waltham watch to replace the crystal. Took off the bezel and found that there seems to be some cardboard looking stuff jammed between the dial and the case… what is this? Any ideas? Stumped. Should I leave it where it is? Never seen anything like this before on a trench type watch.

Did someone try to put a 16-size movement into an 18-size case? Or a 14-size movement into a 16-size case? Or a 12-size movement into a 14-size case? Or a 10-size movement into a 12-size case? You don’t give us enough information for anything but a guess.

Thanks for response. I’m not the most proficient horologist I’m afraid. Have taken some more pictures of movement and measured case (3.1/3.2cm) does any of this help?

It is a 3/0 size movement in a mis-matched case.

I will try and get a side by side photo of this movement and another 3/0 size that I have… I’m pretty sure this movement is slightly larger than a 3/0 movement.

No, you’re right. I’m talking nonsense. They look to be the same size. I guess I must find another case…

That's what you call an "old time watchmaker" fix...
