Hi, This is my first post. I am trying to find a fair value for a 1969 Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo XI Commemorative Watch in 18k gold. I believe it is no.69 of the 1,000 or so made. My grandfather bought it new in 1969 in Hawaii and has worn it ever since. He does not have the box or papers. It is all original and has never been serviced or polished. I am trying to figure out what a fair price would be to purchase it from him. Any advice would be great. Thank you, Wadeland
Congrats on your graddpa's good taste, one sold here recently for reference https://omegaforums.net/threads/speedmaster-ba-145-022-69-tribute-to-astronauts.37001/ Your's has a gold bracelet as well so its worth more If you had all the box and papers from gramp's original purchase it could go far north https://omegaforums.net/threads/this-is-why-you-keep-the-box-and-papers-and-an-oxygen-tank.38139/
Good resource for you. But better pictures, are really going to be needed if you want a true ball park price. http://speedmaster101.com/assessment-guide-2/speedmaster-limited-editions/ FYI this is most likely going to be on the lower end or half of the 15k-25k range denoted on that website. Never serviced and daily worn might be an issue, the insides are really going to have to be looked at and a service will be needed at a minimum. Do not service this through Omega, but a well regarded 3rd party. Side note.. that bezel looks a bit off and the numbers next to the edge seem aligned wrong, it might be the pictures. According to SM101 this should be an original dial DON, which you cannot see, but the DN70 is there as the original would have.
Great info so far. Thank you. I will not be able to get more pictures until he comes back into town in may. But I will post more when I get them. I'm sure he wont let me open the case as it has never been opened. -As for the bezel and dial they are original and correct. The shadows make it look off. -What does "DON" stand for? Dot over 90? -Why not have it serviced by Omega? Just curious. -It is hard to figure a value because I cant find many that have sold. -25K I would imagine would be more for a Astronauts watch. -In my mind it would be more like 15 with box and papers. I was hoping the value would be less so I could offer him a fair price. However, it may be out of my range. Again, thank you for the information!
Omega has serviced my modern Omega watches and in my experience, they have done a great job. I would never take a vintage watch to Omega for servicing, it will come back looking like new, and this is a huge issue as it will destroy the value of the watch. Until there are better pics, you can't really narrow down the value to determine a fair price. But I think most here that chimed in were $15k and up. You can search the Omega Christies auction from Dec 2015 (there are a couple of threads with the prices) and they sold two of these watches, one was an astronaut watch, the other was not.
Hi Wadeland, Just scroll down a couple of threads to find this one: https://omegaforums.net/threads/upd...atch-to-omega-for-service-is-a-problem.32472/ Good luck with acquiring your watch!
The watch, if number 69 is very early, and so even more interesting. It is a shame it has no box or papers - in this watch it could have added at least $5000 to the price. What we need is better photos, to establish the condition of the case, the bezel, and less worryingly (as they are mostly good), the dial. This is a rare reference, and the ones sold at Christies last December were the most I have seen in one place. However the prices were a little high. It also must be remembered that they regularly come up for sale, at the rate I would say about two a year. (Not counting the Christies sale.) When they do come up, they are +/- $15,000. The OP watch has potential to be worth more if the case is good, and the bezel is not to faded and damaged. In my opinion, it has to be around $15,000, or less. Not more from what I see, and lacking paperwork. Here is the best piece I have found on the reference: http://www.watchcarefully.com/articles/speedmaster.html
https://awco.nl/winkel/vintage-collectie/omega-speedmaster/professional-145-022-69-2?pageteller=0 There's one for sale in Amsterdam, 55,000 euros, crazy days
Check the dates on this thread..... A couple of years ago these were estimated around $15,000 and today one was put on sale for $65,000.
What, you mean you expect people to actually pay attention? Pfffft! Silly rabbit. ..... or should I say silly turtle given your avatar?
