What is it about the Speedmasters that makes them so popular?

You may not realize it, but your OP was like going on a Porsche forum and asking why there are so many 911s.

Hey, Jeremy Clarkson made a career out of asking exactly the same question on Top Gear news. I think it's valid. But great job, someone finally put it in a way I can understand.

For me, and this is no joke

Before I discovered this forum,
Before I bought both editions of Moonwatch Only and Omega Journey Through Time
Before I studied speedmaster101 cover to cover and
searched the internet for more and more Speedmaster information.

I stumbled onto this YouTube . As wild as it may seem, watching this 2014 video was where my attraction to Speedmasters began

That's one sweary bloke. I forgot how many Australians loved to use colorful language.

(We know you Fan Boys are secretly running around acting like Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in your NASA Underoos when you think nobody is watching, doing that funny zero-G hop/walk like on the surface of the moon, saying things like "the Eagle has landed" and "one small step for man...." while gazing intently at your 145.022 with the look you used to give your wife before you were married.) 😜
Dammit, we’ve been rumbled!

Wait, hang on. Speedmasters went to the moon?!

I bought a few because Denis is always talking crap about them so I figured he was trying to lock the market and buy them all up himself.
Ya, the fact that Speedmasters were chosen to go to the moon over the most respected brands was my initial attraction.
But once I got one one my wrist and saw the Chrono complications in action was the beginning of the end.
Next was the stepped AML dial, the perfectly applied lume and then, OMG the DON bezel. I feel in love 🥰

FIFY

😀

But still, OP, go try one on. Modern ones are wicked, and the gateway to those vintage ones with patinated lume and step dials that really stir the loins...just ask ulackfocus...

Same reason Submariners are expensive. Classic design. Both defining watches in their categories as well as one of the first in the case of the Speedy the external tachy bezel, the sub defines modern dive watches.

Well made, space or bond tie in. And really just classic great industrial design.

Also many of us own speed and Seamaster.

"Shut this one down"... wow, it's been informative. I feel awfully welcome. I apologize in advance if I read the sentiment wrong but this kind of snobbery doesn't really serve anyone any good. Just trying to get to know other members and learn something along the way, I didn't expect this.
Life is about balance, and this forum has a few extreme ‘fan boys’ and a few extreme ‘fan boy haters’.

I remember hearing that Howard Stern fans spent a certain amount of time listening to his show, while haters spent much more time listening.

This forum is intended for watch fans, specifically Omega watches. The Speedmaster is one of the best known Omega watch and unfortunately for you, the ‘fan boy haters’ spend more time on Speedmaster related forums than casual fans. Therefore, threads like this are quickly polluted by hatred and negativity (and usually nonsense animal posts before the end of the first page).

Don’t let the negativity scare you off. Most members on OF like many watches, and even the negative posters have admirable traits and funny twists on things. It’s hard to nail down why certain objects take on a huge following and others don’t. If you really want to ‘understand’ the fascination, you’ll have to spend some time here or on the many sites others have listed already.

Saw a Virgin Galactic pilot on TV today. He was wearing a Speedmaster. Must be required by Galaxy rules 👍

Watching the private sale forum, I see a lot of Speedmasters changed hand, some for incredible amounts of money. Surely it isn't just the aesthetics. But what else? When I look at them, most of the time I go "that's nice but I still prefer a Seamaster". Perhaps I just don't know the history or spot something special. Anyone care to educate?

Bit dull for a Thursday??? Maybe just needs a bit of an edit mate???

Watching the private magazine forum, I see a lot of big titties change hands. some are incredibly wobbly. Surely it isn't just the aesthetics. But what else? When I look at them, most of the time I go "that's nice but I still prefer a small titty." Perhaps I just don't know about titties or spot something special. Anyone care to educate?

There are many answers but in general iconic designs that have a proven record tend to stand out. Wether the Speedy, or the Rolex sub to name two examples you’re talking tool watches that are designed with purpose over fashion and then defined fashion by their perfect design and function.

Because of this formidable men ( and women when applicable) chose these pieces adding to the iconic legend they carry and making them part of history.

Which leads to the moon on the case of the speedy, and to the ocean on the other. On both cases these watches have been worn by the most prominent explorers of each medium.

In both cases you have design that has endured almost unchanged for over 50 years.... not a bad record.

So, how can they not carry such a status?

There are other examples like the Explorer etc but I think I made my point.

I take the Richard Hammond point of view. Omega should sell only Speedmasters. When you walk into an Omega boutique, the only question you should hear is "what color?"

Yep, and I bet youze guyz carry around little American Flags on wooden dowels to erect in a house plant as part of the fantasy. 😜

Well, duh..... the answer is "black!" 🙄

I think the Speedmaster appeal comes from multiple directions but for me it is primarily the design. I certainly appreciate the history and association with the space race, but ultimately the pedigree of a watch is never the determining factor in my purchase.

I think its design is why this watch has stood the test of time, with today's sales only bolstered by the current trend in vintage collecting as well as the renewed aggressive marketing by Omega.

Edit: simply put, this watch is sexy

I’m not so hot to trot for the speedy. I like the Gray Side watch ok, but as a diver my love is for the Sea Master line. Also, Bond wore a Sea Master so...
As for the Rolexes, I really, really, want an Explorer.

I never understood the fascination with Speedies, so common I found them irrelevant and over hyped. I put one on, did a 180 almost instantly. Its an amazing watch, many variants with subtle differences, and a long history, a true enthusiast piece. I love them and hope to have a late model broad arrow soon.

Well, sure, but Clarkson is an asshole.
