What/How many watch would you buy/have if you have 5K?

One piece worth 5K
3 pieces worth 5K
5 pieces worth 5K

I understand there're so many moving parts to be considered but this is dilemma a lot of newbies face(including me) when it comes to collecting time pieces.
Thanks OF

For starting out collecting? 3 pieces, '50s-'60s (vintage Seamasters, etc.). But less than $2k.

Then once I found my footing, learned a bit, onto a couple in the $1,500 range.

(please note this is NOT how I personally proceeded, but my initial goal was not to be a collector)

I would learn a lot, to be able to find 5k of Watches for 2k, and enjoy all the great interesting parts of the hobby along the way.馃槑

I have reached full capacity until I buy another watch box. I鈥檓 pleased with my collection at the moment and am really only hunting one particular piece so I鈥檇 drop 2,500 on the watch and give my wife 2,500 in hush money and call it a day

Good question but there are a couple of answers

1. Rolex Explorer - 拢5000
2. Longines Moonphase, Hamilton Murph, Tudor Black Bay - 拢5000

Tough question!

I think I'd go right down the middle and get two watches 2.5k each. When you get tired of one, switch to the other 馃槈

Two watches at 5k:
1x 2220.80
1x 2201.50

Then save for a speedy. Not a new one, prefer 80-85 era with tritium, large TACHY font and Serif 7.

Strangely I have that budget right now and while I've got a few options I really don't know what if anything to buy. GS, Panerai, Schumacher Speedy Pro, Navitimer and Hublot Classic Fusion are all in the mix.

Doesn鈥檛 matter, by asking the question you already reveal a desire to own many. Therefore, it鈥檚 only a question of how/where to spend the first 5k. Go either way, then go the other way with the second 5k, and yet another with the third... 馃槈

I don't think it's an either/or. You could start with several cheaper pieces and then trade up over time

I initially bought about $5K of pieces in the $250-$600 range. Then, I thought - "shoot, I'd rather have a smaller number of nicer watches." I've since been trading up to watches in the $1-2K range. And, over time, I could easily see myself consolidating into a collection 3-5 pieces in the $3-$5K range.

But, to answer your question (pre-owned prices, mind you)
1. Rolex Explorer.
2. Tudor BB41, Omega Seamaster 50th GMT, and either a vintage Tudor or Omega dress watch, or a modern seamaster. This is sort of where my collection is currently.
3. Is where I used to be in my collection: Glycine airman reissue, vintage Tudor oysterdate, some vintage Hamiltons, vintage seamaster, etc.

Hold on a minute...5K in what currency? If it鈥檚 GBP, you might not get much of anything the way things are going!

IF it were me and the $5K was in AUD I would look for one good watch for $4K-$4.5K and keep the change for the upcoming hefty cost of a full service on an inherited 1260 Geneve Hummer...... I use a Seiko Orange Monster as a work watch and the SKX011 as my Daily Diver...

For me, quality > quantity (and quality does not necessarily mean $$$)

I would have 1-5 beaters that don鈥檛 count toward this $5k and then focus on what I really like.

A $125 seiko, and then I鈥檇 use the other $4,875 to buy and flip until I could get a $10k Rolex.

still possible to do this. a lot harder now as things are not moving well. but if you know your niche it's all about buying at the right price.

i ask myself daily do i really want a 5-10k watch? do i want to worry about it much more than a 3k watch that i spent 1k on?..would i treat it better than the kaz i bought from you?......no not really..seems like it would treat me like a hostage if i spent that much. anoter thing is there's so much diminished returns after x dollars spent imo. 10k for a new rolex sub????......gtfo

I never said $10k on a new Rolex...

I am somewhat joking in my post, but I do agree with you in the diminished returns.

In all honesty I鈥檇 probably spend around $2500-3500 on a Omega PO or a higher end Seiko.

My advice for a newbie

4k on modern Speedmaster.
$500 on a beater diver
$500 on straps to make 2 watches feel like 10 watches.

1+ Agree. Spend the major part on a nice watch you really like and then buy a cheaper watch as a complement to cover situations where you don鈥檛 feel comfortable to wear it. Beater, diver, dress watch or what ever it can be
