·Hello folks
I'm a long-term lurker, having decided a while back that a usable vintage watch was something I would like to own, to be used (potentially) as a daily. My usual Ebay UK search is for mechanical Omegas sorting by lowest price first. I then discard those which don't catch my eye, look like too much work, or simply aren't in my budget.
I spotted a cheap one recently. However, upon closer inspection, too many things weren't right with it. I know little to nothing about what to look for, but my layman's observations were as follows;
The hands are wrong. The minute hand (at least) has been replaced or is maybe even broken.
The unsigned crown is a replacement.
The watch is rough in general, with a 'ding' in the case, opposite the crown.
The 166.041 case wouldn't have come with a 601 movement (22078594 1965 year)?
The De Ville dial wouldn't have come with the 166.041 (Geneve?) case?
Would gold hands and indices have come with a gold case?
The strap is a replacement.
So, this one was discounted from my search. Fast forward a couple of weeks, and drunken me submits an offer, expecting it to be refused. It was accepted almost immediately 😀
So what have I bought, and is it worth doing anything to? I popped it on my timegrapher, and it clearly needs some work. There are a few other defects which weren't visible in the advert photos, such as the chapter ring type-thing, being split.
