·How old is your son? I wouldn't necessarily count on your son caring about watches, if he's very young or hasn't shown interest in mechanical watches yet.
I got a used 114270 for about USD 3500 about a year ago, with it needing a bracelet and a service.
Great watch that I only wear sometimes, there are some people who react.... oddly to Rolex.
He is 18. He likes what he calls "traditional watches", and he has an Apple Watch as well. I wouldn't present him with such a watch for years, but I'm sure one day he would enjoy having a birth year watch.
As for people reacting to Rolex oddly, I'm not sure how you mean that, but as you probably know, the Explorer is really the anti-Rolex Rolex. It is an unblingy as you can get, and performs as a true field watch. That is why I like it.
