Hello Rolex people! I would like your honest opinion. This Explorer is from 2001-2002 is being offered to me. Is this something I should consider seriously? No box or papers, no service history, but assessed as working well. Returnable.

My experience with Rolex is limited. Can you see anything unacceptable here? Any comments will be appreciated! Thanks OF!

Looks nice. Of course price is everything. And make sure it's not a fake; some of them are really very good these days.

The question is, do YOU want it for what it is, or just because it is a Rolex? And price?

This.

Do you actually like it and we're you searching for one? I don't understand how some people seems to consider buying a watch simply because it's available and has been offered to them.

I'm not saying the OP is doing this but we do seem to be getting more and more posts in this vein.

No. I have posted before that I had a chance to pick one of these up two years ago and passed. I regret that. I’m looking for a nice one.

I do, and I was. I think the 36mm explorer is a classic, but I don’t want to impulse buy so I posted for your advice and the advice of the Rolex owners here on OF.

Well the pics aren't great but it seems like the lugs might be a bit soft from too much polishing.

There's no real shortage of 14270's so any purchase is a balance between cost and condition.

I personally think a tritium full set with lug holes 14270 would be nice.

It depends on the price. Looks ok other than being polished a couple of time.

36mm Explorer is a classic and its built like a tank. A small tank

Yes, a full kit in unpolished flawless condition is always the ideal, and for that a premium on the price is expected. If say, a near perfect example were going for around $5.5k, and this guy wanted $5k, I would pass as a better one can be had for not much more. But if this one were being offered at $3.5k, yeah, I would buy it and wear the crap out of it. All a matter of perspective.

Not close to 3.5. I’m tempted because it’s my son’s birth year and it would be a nice thing to gift him someday. Having said that, I think you are correct about looking for a full kit tritium. Now, do I let go of my beloved Speedy if I find one? This would be a daily driver and I wouldn’t want two of those. Tough call.

Absolutely not! Like shoes, watches should be rotated...you can’t have just one daily 😉

I saw a 14720 with luminova dial for sale watch only at 3k6. Very tempted but I was looking for a tritium one only 🙁🙁

How would that work? Cloning? LOL! Seriously, the 14270 is a genuine GADA and buying one would make me truly consider thinning down to a bare minimum.

I have such a long wish list, but ever since buying an Explorer (214270) I have not managed to convince myself I need anything else. I still have and often wear my Planet Ocean, though.

How old is your son? I wouldn't necessarily count on your son caring about watches, if he's very young or hasn't shown interest in mechanical watches yet.

I got a used 114270 for about USD 3500 about a year ago, with it needing a bracelet and a service.
Great watch that I only wear sometimes, there are some people who react.... oddly to Rolex.
