What are your thoughts on the Patek Calatrava?

IMO it's the quintessential classic dress watch. To me, the Calatrava IS Patek, although everyone seems more interested in the Nautilus these days (I couldn't care less about it, personally).

If I won the lottery, it would probably be the first watch I'd buy. But in the real world, with my own money, I'd rather buy 10 Omegas. 😁
During the visit I described, I tried a Nautilus. At the time, mid 2010’s, the price had not as yet blown up. It felt odd on my wrist. Very uncomfortable. Certainly not worth the money to me.

I don't like the Nautilus either. I was surprised at how much I actually like the larger size Aquanaut (White gold blue dial) in the wrist it felt really great. I was not attracted to it until I tried it on. That being said there's a large waiting list for it.

It's a classy and understated watch. If you get bored with it, it looks like a watch you could easily resell.

I tried the 40mm version of Nautilus before and it did not work on my small wrist. Looked like an oversized piece of biscuit with the shape and profile. The smaller 37.5mm version though, that's a very elegant piece.

That is precisely why I love mine. It's an inoffensive classic that I can wear for the rest of my life....However it does tug at my heart strings.

Thanks this thread was lacking pics !
Very nice !

I bought an original Nautilus from an AD in 1979, MSRP was $3,750 but I paid $3,000. Never could warm to the watch, it was too big and always reminded me of a big, flat cookie on my wrist. I eventually sold it but it was a hard sell, no one wanted it, sold it at auction through Sotheby's. It's an overrated watch, imo, the design is just too 1970's. Obviously I should have just tucked it away in its little cork box and reaped a fortune now. But it's hard to predict the future, otherwise I would have bought Microsoft stock in 1986 when it went public at split adjusted price of 6¢.

The Calatrava is a classic design but I don't particularly like the current ones, they just look forced and too commercial and don't have the natural look of the older ones. And the current price is ridiculous, imo, there are much better options available for less money. But the Patek name is golden now, it's been marketed supremely.

$3000 in 1979 was quite a bit of money!

Add another zero+ and you'll have what I was looking at.

Yeah that's crazy enough. The resale prices? 🤨

With inflation it's about $12,300 today.

My former boss waited a year for a RG Aquanaut…Beautiful piece, but he was sitting at lunch going,” I don’t really know why I bought this, just because I could I guess.” Stupid money these days.

Yeah, The Calatrava 39mm is about 40g after taxes etc. It is stupid. I just fell in love with it.

Are you calling my wife irrational?
When I met my wife…cute, not crazy …guess I’ll put a ring on her. Rational. Unlike my watch decisions.

I can't fault Patek, just have never been attracted to them. I find Vacheron Constantin more to my taste. But I find JLC dress watches hit my sweet spot. How many classic Pateks and VCs are really JLC movements that were developed for them?

I think Pateks in general write checks with their name that their looks can't cash. If they are the pinnacle of horology, it's a very boring summit.

recently my friend recommend me to buy patek Calatrava Ref. 5196 what do you think ?
I think it is a great looking piece. Used to have a 5196P but felt like I was not ready for it, now 7 years later I would not mind wearing it!
