I need help choosing between two different vintage Omegas. My Omega knowledge is basic at best, hence me putting this out on a forum.

There are two Omega Seamasters that have really caught my eye.

An 80’s Omega Seamaster Calypso 196.0234

A 60’s Omega Seamaster 120m automatic 165.027

When it comes to wearability, maintenance, reliability, appreciation/depreciation etc I’m in the dark. Which would you guys pick?

Overall I’d say the 120. It’s more classic. In terms of reliability it just depends on whether the movement is serviced and in good condition.

The automatic over the quartz every day of the week. Buying an old quartz watch is like collecting obsolete computers...curiosities, maybe, but not a work of art.

If you do choose to go for the Seamaster 120, do your research first -- there are a lot of fake ones out there. Lots of threads on this forum discuss what to look for.

The Calypso is cool, and as someone born in 1982 it’s one of the few watches from that year I’d actually consider tracking down… but a nice 120 would be my choice over a Calypso.

the 120 you can put in straps too, the Calypso pretty much limits you to the bracelet

TIL art requires a mainspring

As mentioned you may want to expand your options beyond these two as the Seamaster 120 and its variants are a minefield

When you say minefield, are you talking fakes, or something else?
