What’s the best bit of life advice/tip you’ve ever received?

When I was a wee lad, after doing something nice, and complaining to my Mom that I got nothing back, she said, “virtue is its own reward.”

My grandfather once gave me this amusing bit of heath advice: “Eat oatmeal for a hundred years, and you’ll live a long time…”

And you - what nuggets of wisdom did others impart or you picked up along the way, that continue to inform how you live?

Measure twice, cut once. It has served me well on many occasions.

Wisdom is something I always seem to get right after I need it.

There are three things in life worth spending money on. Booze, Women not hookers, and toilet paper. If you can’t afford the few dollars extra a month for the good toilet paper you have issues.

So many...

• Be careful what you own lest it own you.

• Don't shit where you eat.

• A happy wife isn't necessarily a happy life.

• Actions are more important than words - words are a dime a dozen.

• Ignorance is not bliss, it's ignorance.

• The patina of life is the nectar of living.

• The dead have it easiest of all.

• When it comes to huge life changing plans telling others weakens your resolve - keep it inside and move forward. Keep it secret and it stays powerful.

• Being an asshole is the easiest way. Don't be an asshole.

• Building something, anything, takes baby steps -- climb the mountain methodically, slowly.

• Measure thrice, cut once.

• You cannot control anything except your emotions.

• If you don't ask you'll never know.

• Calm the fuck down.

• Smiling helps everything.

• Remember, all this - life - is supposed to be fun otherwise it's pointless.

• Clean underwear can help almost every situation.

I'm paraphrasing badly but something along the lines of "judge a man by how he treats someone who has nothing of value to him". I've massacred the quote but hopefully you get the gist.

Don’t f*** with your watches.

Acquired that tip from the watchmakers/instructors at AWCI build-a-watch school back in 2018.

You are always responsible for how you act, no matter how you feel, and

Don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice.

Think for yourself, don't follow the crowd because the crowd is usually clueless.

My grandmother had an aunt and her motto was (in Danish): “Den der smørrer godt kører godt”

Translates to something like: “the one who grease well runs well” :D
