Hi

I'm based in West sussex. I'm looking for a good reliable watch restorer/ servicer for my collection that isn't over the top on price? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

www.watchguy.co.uk is a member here and from the reports I have heard he does a good job. Though he is busy so you will have to book a date on his website

Thanks for this

I have only good things to say about Watchguy.

No wait, that's not true.

I absolutely hate that there are 15 days until he takes in new orders!!!

J E Allnutt in Midhurst (www.littlecogs.co.uk). Does good work and always has some interesting stuff for sale.
I can also recommend STS in Essex if you want to travel.

In Essex, but Swiss Time Services.

But a service now starts at £450 plus postage, plus any parts that are needed.

Service parts, seals, crystals (usually), crown, pushers are included.

And it comes with a 2 year warranty.

Not cheap, but I don't think anyone that does good work is.

+1 for watch guy
I've had multiple vintage watches with them and been very pleased with their work
They are used to vintage watches, communicate really well and- importantly- do just what you ask for
The cost is very reasonable too

You'll have to get 'in' but once you are they release slots on a regular basis

You'll also have to mail your watches but a lot of us do
I regularly send watches to and from Dubai to the UK for service without any issues ( yet!)

I agree but its also £450, if you have a vintage watch and don't want the crown and crystal changing and don't want the case polished. I understood from the OP that he had a collection and didn't want somewhere that was over the top on price.

I guess "over the top is objective".

I paid £700 to have a clutch changed on my Smart car... That's a much less skilled task than stripping, servicing and rebuilding a watch movement - I say this as a man who has changed a clutch in the past, but wouldn't contemplate taking a movement apart! 😀

You own a Smart car? I bet you give a great haircut 😀

Haha, sadly not.

We're at VW today picking up a Golf GTI... The smart was a second car. 😜

Well, how many smart cars do you own? I own quite a few more watches than cars. I would personally balk at paying that amount of money for a service 😀

My point being that for the amount of work that goes into a watch service, the price is quite reasonable.

Can see how it stack up with larger collections, but tend to think that if you buy cheap, you buy twice...

Each to their own though. 😀

I won't go into an argument about watch repair pricing, I just want to state that I have no reason to believe that, for instance, Watchguy.uk does a worse job than STS - a service for my Constellation ran to about £200, with mainspring, winding stem, case back gasket and crystal included.

For chronographs, a lot of the price difference is eroded, however!

Agreed and not intending in any way to knock anyone's work. Was thinking more of the "serviced" you get on some watches when you buy them... Which very often means getting a proper service done to rectify things.

Been the, done that, bought the main Spring! 😁

And to your point, all my STS experience has been with chronographs... Which appear to be on the more expensive end with all good watchmakers. 😀
