Wearing 2 watches

Today on the subway I saw a huge man wearing two watches, one stylish stainless steel one on his left arm and another rubbery one with a rubber strap on his right arm.

I am not talkative enough to intrude on strangers even though I got curious why would you wear two.

Both watches seemed liked unknown brand quartz, stainless steel one looked well made, maybe I just couldn't recognize the brand or so.

Is anyone here wearing two watches? To me it seems like a good way to scratch both since I usually protect my left arm more from bumping into stuff. Having another watch would make it super annoying to be in public unless it's a junker, since you can't realistically protect both hands from bumping into stuff.

I thought about this recently when I saw a smart watch on sale (Prime days) but I don't want to give up wearing my fancy Swiss time pieces. What if I wore the dumb watch on my left wrist, and the smart watch on my right?

I do sometimes want the features of a smartwatch. Never tried one though. But I might get used to it if I try and then I would feel weird because I want to wear my vintage Seikos but also to have extra features.

What if you wear the smartwatch on the same hand but put on weather plus something else so there's no redundancy? Ie. no time on the smart watch. I wonder if the two watches would bump into each other though.

So maybe:
Weather
Emails/Notifications
Daily schedule

I would be too paranoid about scratching my "real" watch.

This reminds me: I once had a smart watch, an early edition of the Samsung. After a few months, it started to lose time. Turns out, there was no way to set it! After the initial pairing with my smart phone, there was no way for it to re-sync the time, Mr. Google was unable to help, others reported the same problem, and I got disgusted and got rid of it.

At least on my Omega I can pull out the crown and adjust if needed.

I've heard of doing that to keep track of different time zones. I sometimes wear two, but usually just to home after picking one up new or from service.

I often wear two [or more] watches at one time…in fact, I wore two Speedmasters yesterday.

Also, during ‘special operations’, I’ll usually wear at least two watches…pictured below is from 2022 when Top Gun Maverick debuted in theaters. I wore my beloved 1986 Seiko 6309-7049 and my SRP777 [as well as all my old Navy issued flight gear] to the theater. I purchased my 6309-7049 new during Navy flight training so it is very sentimental.

You need to keep balance on both wrists! Imagine carrying only one Invicta, all the muscles in that arm... The other would be really underdeveloped.

Yeah, for some reason I instinctively thought about Invicta when I saw the two watches. Nothing specific. No idea why. Something subconscious.

The only reason I can think of logically to wear two is the smart watch / dumb watch reason for fitness tracking, messaging, etc. Since timekeeping is a function of the smartwatch also it makes the use of the dumb watch more ornamental.

During the pandemic I felt like a rube carrying my phone through the house all day for work. The Apple Watch solved the problem and the apple phone for the most part stayed on the night stand. Once the pandemic was over, the apple watch almost naturally came off and I went back to using the phone and appreciating the silence and lack of living the qualified life of tracing every moment.

People honestly struggle with this. I don’t as I feel absolute boundaries. I do not want my wrist messaging me. I’ll check when I want to check. When I was younger I wanted to be alerted 20 different ways. Now I want it up to me and under my thumb.

The way I see some people deal is they wear their smart watches M-F 8-6 and their dumb watches the rest of the time. It works for them.

Personally I think there is a whole market here. Apple could sell Rolex and Omega crowns, and custom dial faces and colorways. Those companies could open up entire new divisions and technologies making fancy platinum and gold crowns and software to make dials and features for the dials. And straps! Who can forget straps! The fact NONE of this has happened has baffled me.

Luckily I dont need a smart watch and I am glad my " dumb " watch dont beep, ring or harrass me with e-mails or other electronic nuseance. It just tell the time and look awsome.

Only time I double wrist is to or from my watch maker.

Why only two watches? Today I am wearing 3. My new to me 60-year old Accutron 214, my Rolex Date-Just, and my private label 1883 model Waltham pocket watch.

A pocket watch is cheating 😀. Like having a third arm or something. You could wear even 4 of them in different pockets and never scratch or bump them. The tricky part would be to wear 3 watches on your hands.

Wearing two watches on different wrists is known as Schwarzkopf-ing. On the same wrist is Castro-ing.

Why not wear 5 at one time?

I don’t know what everyone else is doing, but I like to wear four watches in one, all set to the same time.

That would take me watchmaker 8 years to service it

Nowadays NASA astronauts continuously wear two watches onboard the ISS, the well-known ActiWatch and another wrist watch (mostly X-33).
