We Talk To Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek About The MoonSwatch

I don't get the hype. Apparently there are still people who queue up for these every day, and there are still reports of discord outside shops as buyers queue to try and buy them. And yeah, so much for the online availability part...
I wonder how much of it is true. I’ve walked past a dozen Swatch boutiques in many capital cities in Europe during the last two months and they were close to empty.

I'm in the camp that is worried that the MoonSwatch will cheapen the true Omega Speedmaster brand, even though I must admit there are many design aspects of these Swatches that work pretty well aesthetically.

So I was extra surprised that Mr. Hayek said the MoonSwatch craze has increased sales of REAL Moonwatches. Do we really believe this could be true, or is it some sort of rationalization?
Every quote in the article is just a load of self aggrandizing marketing bu****t. Some sentences could have come straight out of Trump’s mouth. Definitely to be taken with a grain of salt.

To be considered, clearly.
When I tried in Valencia back in April there were no cues at all... No ppl sleeping on the streets...just the occasional walk in person asking for the watch, and the polite reply from the salesperson saying that there was no stock and they didn't know when they would get any...That's the only Swatch shop in VLC...
Three months further down the road I seriously doubt there's so much frantic interest anymore.

Question to ask to ourselves: would we be talking about this were it not for the article in the OP refreshing our memories ?

As I wrote in the article, I've also checked with other sources than Omega and Swatch to see if this is true, and I've been shown actual sales/transaction numbers that prove it, so apparently it works for Omega and Swatch.

I was in Zurich the other day for a business trip with some colleagues, and there was no one in the Swatch boutique. We entered and asked for the MoonSwatch, they had several available (not all 11 different models) and we decided to buy a few (one each, indeed). As soon as other people saw us doing the transaction, the boutique quickly became full and more people asked for them. After 20 minutes or so, the stock was gone again.

I've also heard some stories about the Swatch boutique in Rotterdam (a local one for me) that some people picked up their MoonSwatches. On the other hand, you don't want to see the hateful DMs and name-calling I receive from people who are very frustrated and angry that they either can't get one, don't want one anymore, have to travel too far, etc. etc. Spending 1000 words on a watch that they claim they lost interest in. Whether you are against the MoonSwatch or pro MoonSwatch, including the accompanying sales tactics and policies going from left-to-right at Swatch, the watch and the effect it has on people is an interesting phenomenon.

I would say that I am probably a good example of the positive effect this collaboration has had on Omega Speedmaster moon watch sales. I often thought of buying a Speedy but never got around to it, along comes the moon Swatch and my interest is rejuvenated, I felt it would scratch the itch with the Moonswatch, I like the look. I was in Edinburgh recently where I popped into the Swatch shop to see if they had one for sale but unfortunately they were sold out. Walking a bit further on I came across the Omega AD so I went in for a look and walked out with a 3861 with the hesalite crystal. I would say the Moonswatch definitely had a part to play in my purchase and I imagine I am not alone. However, would I buy a Moonswatch now, unlikely.

I’ve cooled on wanting one. A few months ago I’d have ordered one sight unseen but now I will want to see one before buying one.

I hope they become plentiful, and I hope the aftermarket for them is more inline with a random used item instead of scalpers looking for a quick profit.

Well, that was a thorough ass-kissing. Why publish a Swatch press release in the form of an interview? It's like one of those infomercials where they have a fake journalist feeding the "interviewee" questions and saying "wow" during every answer.

Interesting, and thanks for the confirmation.

I'm still dreading the day I wear my Speedy and someone remarks "Oh you got the MoonSwatch!" I'm practicing a scornful grimace for that.

Is this entirely fair? RJ asked about supply issues, which many people wondered about. RJ has also already shared that he thought this collaboration a positive one and good for both brands. The MoonSwatch always turned me off but I wouldn't expect an interviewer to say they thought it was a terrible idea and then ask for a comment. What am I missing?

I’ve become quite immune for these kind of salty remarks from frustrated people. I am a fan of the MoonSwatch since day one, but I surely don’t agree with all the tactics. I get Hayek’s reasoning, but don’t agree, especially for the areas where there are no Swatch boutiques even close. I asked about it, but there was not really an answer. It’s pointless to start a passive agressive discussion in the 1 hour timeslot with someone like Hayek, it will not change his way of going forward and it would have stopped him from answering my other questions. I just let him speak and that’s what you read in the interview. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Is this not the guy who told RJ at the launch that these would be released online in the not too distant future?

I don’t have the slightest interest in that piece of crap watch, but if people want to waste money or speculate on it, that’s their choice. I am just tired of wannabe influencers and industry insiders. This is a forum for enthusiasts and collectors, and I will call it like I see it. This garbage watch doesn’t need more hype.

I honestly don’t understand why these articles continue to be linked on the forum. If the author wants to participate on OF and post his own threads, then he should be welcome. But he doesn’t. The articles have little substance and so I don’t understand why he and his commercial enterprise has a privileged position. Just my candid opinion.

That's ok RJ.
I can see all sides of the arguments and understand that you have a need for each other with the needle shifted more toward NH.
Failing that, only the faces and the names will change😉

Can’t wait to hear your take on the “what shoes are you wearing today” thread.

Also brings to mind something I read recently:

I think you're having a bad day. … you can give your own opinion without criticizing the opinions of others. It's a useful skill to cultivate, and it separates contributors from trolls.

I was at my daughters sports day on Friday and some fella had a Pluto on. I was wearing my EW, but I have to say from a distance it looked pretty cool (surprisingly for me)

next time I’m in London and passing the boutique I may pick one up. It’s a shame they are not online, but it is what it is I guess…

And the game has evolved beautifully. Before one needed to be interested in a watch worth at least $7000 in order to get snubbed by the AD and not put on a waiting list.

Now people who have only $250 to spend can get the same experience.
