This thread is like asking people to comment on their babies pictures. There are lots of ugly babies, but it is generally impolite to say, 'that's one ugly baby'.

Unless you're on Seinfeld.

I think if one is equating their children with their watches, there needs to be some serious introspection. Further, discussing a watch one dislikes or doesn’t appreciate aesthetically in a generalized way, non-specific to a particular owner, is far different than anyone commenting directly to someone’s face about their particular child. I find your analogy specious.

For goodness sake, get a grip.

Most of the Genta designed watches after the pole router. Especially that bit of stainless flat stock with hex head bolts on the bezel. Sunken hex head bolts with grooves for a screw driver just hurt my mechanics heart.

I love this place; I do.

But there are subjects where a soft underbelly flips to the upside.

So I am staying completely out of this thread!

OMG, you’ve just named the watches I would get if I could only have one daily wearer- and if I could afford them of course. 😵‍💫
Disco volante I also like- but that would not be my one daily wearer.
Just me…I’ve tried all these and they just look ridiculous on my large wrist. You’d wear them better.

Larry,

Tell me more about the Disco Volante. I always thought of it as sort of understated. What do you find uninspiring about it?

The ones I refer to are the UG variants. Too weird for my taste.

Well if it is popular with the masses, then I probably do not like it.

Tastes also change. When I first saw the Dynamic I hated it. Now I can not get enough of it.

The Speedmaster is the ONE watch. However the reasons I liked it 30 years ago, are no longer what they were. Then like now everyone wanted R. No one cared about Omega or the speedmaster. Then someone published an article in the collectors magazines, A movie came out and books were written. Then the company was revived. I lost interest for 18 years.

It really is not about what I like. I know someone who collected bent and rusted nails and staples. People collected bottle caps and can lids. So the manufactures started adding graphics on the hidden underside of the cap for them to collect. And sell more products.

Sometimes it is volume, other times it is having the one thing no one else can have. And that becomes crass when such collectors like to lord it over others. Or host meetings to show off stuff to the unworthy by appointment only.

Threads like this tend to imply that some collectors are simply insecure. Others are basically bored, and looking for something to quicken them.

That’s what makes a horse race. Because I always thought of the Sub design, especially without the date, as a classic.

I can see it as a classic given all the history, imitations, and popularity. But it's not for me.

Lots of pots being stirred in this thread. ::stirthepot::

Can't say I agree with all of it (teardrop lugs and wavy Seamaster dials are awesome).

I never understood the Patek Nautilus and Aquanaut craze. Not my favorite design for the price.

At the risk of getting myself banned (j/k, and @hen beat me to it anyway) I really don't see what people find attractive in any of the Genta designs. I will admit, however, that I haven't seen them all. So he might have done something interesting, at least once.

Now you’ve gone too far. Criticizing Gerald Genta and his designs? He’s like a god to us collectors. I find myself so offended by this I’m telling my boss that I’ve been triggered, don’t feel safe, and am going home.

I feel bad having neglected to tag "Snowflake Trigger Warning" on my post.

Dennis, one of the previous moderators here, HATED. Speedmasters. I really like them. We also have things in common we like, and dislike. All good…

Whatever his faults were, Dennis had exquisite taste in watches.

All I can add here is that I enjoy giving "likes" in WRUW, but some "likes" are for esteemed Forum members and their participation and not necessarily for the watch being featured.

I also “like” watches that I don’t like. I appreciate people participating and sharing stuff they enjoy. My peeve is out of focus pictures though. I don’t like those.

Al babies are ugly little buggers if you ask me! It takes at least 20 years before they become at all interesting and in many cases not even then!

I enjoy liking every watch in that thread, even, like you, if it isn’t one I particularly like. My peeve is watches that aren’t actively being worn and are instead just laying on a table. I don’t like those. I mean, the thread is wru wearing after all 😁
