It isn’t a good story, but estate sales and a keen eye can be your friend. The dial is mint under a busted crystal. Every lume pip is intact and you can still see the Breitling engraving on the case back.

Why do you say “it isn’t a good story”

The outcome is great! But, it isn’t a particularly thrilling tale. Mostly just an example of how I spend too much time trolling online looking for watches, lol.

Nice 815 long playing. Hands look right on it as well. Case back say 815?

yep, it’s faint but the 815 is there. Based on the case serial number, looks like it was produced in 1973.

Hey this thread is all about treasure hunting reports and it's certainly thrilling to see you snagged that piece as none of us managed to pull a Breitling chronograph from some random estate sale lately. 👍

I gotcha I was thinking maybe it was a sad estate sale of someone passing away or something. Nothing wrong with what your doing I see people spending loads of time playing a games on the phone with no positive outcome. That is a very nice find. I like the old breitling look, something about that B is catchy. I think I prefer them to many of the modern ones I see. Looks like it was time well spent

Yes indeed since it's a fairly valuable watch that he actually managed to buy. Most of the higher end stuff I post about in this thread that I spotted while hunting might look cool but I haven't yet managed to close the deal.

Spent the day at the Chelsea market today and things are picking up nicely. Quite a few used watch vendors set up with pretty much anything imaginable. I horse traded and sold off some of the stuff I have been finding here in Connecticut to a couple of the vendors and basically hung out chit chatting with some of the fellow watch hunters. One vendor had an interesting old Fortis Marine Master but once he told me his price I didn't bother to have him take it out of the glass case for closer examination.

Loads and loads of vintage Omegas, mostly seamasters and some looked pretty good but the prices are sky high. Almost better off buying them from the indoor shops across the street at the antique building.

Sky high for your purposes or higher than you would normally see elsewhere? What kind of price range are they asking?

Yes

Yes, as I mentioned one would be better off buying vintage Omegas from actual indoor shops across the street.

Beat up stuff for more money than nice examples available across the street at the indoor shops.

I stopped at a yard sale this weekend and picked up 3 watches for $40... an Omega, a Longines and a Caravelle.
All look good and are working well but will be serviced and polished very soon.
The Omega has a caliber 563 and the Longines has a caliber 370
I didn't necessarily want the Caravelle but it was a package deal so I didn't argue.
Not bad for $13.33/each 😀

Beautiful, clean movement on the Longines. The minute and hour hands seem to be slightly different styles but this should be an easy fix. Too bad about the seamaster dial - it may just be me but it looks like there spaces on the hour markers where there should be lume dots. Movement looks nice and clean. Well done!

Only because the likelihood of every lume dot being missing is very small I doubt there ever were any. Also, it was a retirement watch and the people who were having the sale were very simple, I don't think they would have had a watch altered (or serviced for that matter) I don't know if the Longines was altered but I doubt it for the same reason.
They are on their way to my watchmaker now so I should know more next week sometime.

Non watch content, but I’ll take vintage Persol’s for $80 all day everyday.

What are you talking about? That islanders bottle opener/pocket watch is a hot commodity.

Very cool! Make sure they are UV resistant otherwise damaging to the eyes. My old B&L's are useless and fit for looking at only!
