Watch treasure hunting report

Hi thanks for the interest and I apologize for not posting lately as I am assigned the night shift and am still trying to get used to the upside down hours and sleep patterns. I have loads of watch treasure hunting updates to report and will get to them within the next few days...if I can manage to keep awake. 😁
Ouch, I feel your pain. With no travel I have had weeks on EU time here in California, not easy to deal with that kind of sleeping pattern change.

But looking forward to more updates, this really is one of my favorite threads. I havent been able to do real boots on the ground in a while so really like hearing about the old stomping grounds. (Lived in RI, took the train into the city most weekends back in college days)

Man, if we’re all invited to post our finds in here I should add this one.

Cool you posted that nifty find of yours and for sure the more the merrier as far as everyone posting their catches in here! If the forum was depending on me being able to sustain this thread merely on my finds y'all would be pretty disappointed 😁

I posted these 2 recent finds on @Dan S current project threads. Both were at a little auction house in southern Ontario that has switched to online. I was able to drop by and look at them before I started to bid. Both need service.

I've been twice in US; 2011 (East) and 2012 (West).
First time i saw many "Antiques shop" but i didn't stop; the following year while i was in Utah i decided to visit one. I wish i've done it before; at the time i wasn't involved in this watches crazyness, but, if it was for me, i've bought almost everything.
Instead, given the fact that baggages space were not so much, i grabbed some '50 and '60 magazines, some records (Springsteen's Born in the USA, Segers' Live Bullet and Lofgren's Night Fade Away) and some plates.
I'm planning to come back as soon as this Covid pandemic will be over.
Furthermore, i'll have my revenge on my wife as i know very vell Tiffany Store in NYC and LA...
So, please leave something worth 😀

Rest assured Fred; you are 3rd in line with a asterisk beside your name.

That's a step up from what's usually beside my name 😁

Weekdater and the Russian are runners. The Bell-Matic - a less common 27j JDM version - will be nice after a service.

It is finally warm enough to have yard sales again here in the northeast of the U.S. in the state of Maine, to be exact. Last Saturday, at one of the first sales I hit, an older gent was running it and though there was very little out on the porch and I didn't see any watches, I asked if he might have any old watches. He replied he did and went back in the house to find them. A few minutes later he came back with a quart basket of watches. This was the only one that wasn't a cheap Walmart quartz. (I even checked all the bracelets, looking to see if one might have a useful deployant BoR or something else that didn't belong on it, but no such luck, all were the twist-o-flex types.) I gave this little 32mm Bulova a wind and it didn't run. I showed the fella that it wouldn't run and asked "How much for a broken watch.", using my best talk 'em down line that I know. He replied "Guess I can't ask too much.....how about a quarter." I agreed to the deal and after I declined to buy them all for just a few dollars I headed down the driveway....wondering what I was going to do with another broken watch. I did think, well it is an automatic, I gave it a few shakes and to my amazement by the time I was climbing back into my truck it had started up. When we pulled into the next sale, I set the watch to the correct time, 12:22 and after cleaning the old man cheese off the case and polishing the crystal, I have worn it enough each day to keep it running the 8 days since. In that time I believe it has gained about 80 seconds. Good enough to be declared an accurate runner where I come from, especially not knowing it's service history. I don't usually care for watches with more than 3-6-9-12 numerals and much prefer stick or dagger indices and of course I wouldn't be against it having a 35mm case, but the Scotch/Irish blood in me has really taken to this all SS little champ. I really like that even the crown is SS and doesn't show base metal like so many other cheap yard sale finds do. Thanks for reading this long winded story of the hunt that produced a little treasure. I am just happy to add one more gem to the vintage watch on a budget collection.

Nice grab! I believe that is the Sea King. I had the same watch, it is now in my lady’s collection.

Happy to oblige:

And now that I have the name Sea King to go on, am I right that the G in front of the serial number means this watch is from 1962? If so, it is actually a birth year watch for me! I know a lot of you guys have birth year Rolex's or Speedies, but this would be my first birth year watch, Bulova and for a quarter or not. Kind of cool!

Good find! I always look for watches at garage sales and although 99.9% of the time there are no watches or the watches they have are quartz junk it's that .1% that makes it worth it.
And it's usually the same story, I ask the one having the garage sale if they have any watches, and most of the time they say "You know, I do but didn't think to put them out" then they go root around the house and come out with a few.
I've found some incredible pieces.... a mid 60's Seamaster that looks incredible & a very unique Longines bought together for around $25 at a sale and the best piece yet, a pre-revolutionary 18k solid gold, 1/4 repeater Verge Fusee I paid $75. It was appraised for around $6k.

M1 is the date code so it was made in 1961.
And, I thought the Sea King had a whale on the dial? Mine does and most I've seen also have that but I don't know when they started putting them on the dial.

You see M1?? I see M3 with my jewelers loupe. Dang, close, but I think it is from 1963. For a few minutes there I thought I had a birth year Sea King. And I have googled up some photos and there are other late 50's and early 60's Sea Kings without the whale. I believe it must have been a later feature? Thanks for all the info.....you guys are the best!
