Yeah, Lesco was rather, um, painting with a broad brush of racism there.
They don't just think it. It's not only safe for them, it's actually only safe to share your views if you're racist. If you're not racist, it's time to be quiet about it.
You're probably right. But,
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
You're probably right. But,
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists

To speak out for me
Interestingly, the author Martin Niemoller originally supported Hitler, and found himself in concentration camps before being liberated by the Allies. Some self-reflection adds to the depth of this.

I'm familiar with Niemoller. In fact, he performed the marriage for my grandfather's brother.
I truly hope I am wrong and hyperventilating.
This is pretty much the point.
