after going through the watch box thread and seeing some amazing things, i often wonder that most of the purposes don't seem that secure.

what i mean by that is if you're ever going to get robbed, the thief is going to go right for your bedroom dresser first, followed by all your antique looking furniture and fancy boxes

some have safes, but they don't look too nasty......i obv watched a lot of locked up abroad type shows.

i remember i was ripped off many years ago. the crooks stole a bunch of quarters in a big bottle...they left a trail of quarters into the woods.....lol

and lol ..i keep half my watches in my top dresser draw...obv they need to be moved

Nothing is perfect. A huge impenetrable safe, if possible, might work for some. I tried the home thing for a while but it turned out to be a bit risky. Now I go for the bank safety deposit box, and even that is not perfect.

Leave a few cheap watches in the top dresser drawer and put the rest in an unexpected hidden place.

some of those G-shocks are now pushing 1k. You might get some dummy invictas instead :D

regarding safes, yes all safes can be penetrated but in the average smash and grab burglary nobody is going to bring an Oceans 11 type safe cracker. If they can’t carry it out they’ll likely leave it. You can further enhance security with cameras, alarms, and dogs. A thief is likely going to move onto something easier and lower risk. Top it off with insurance and you’re pretty well protected.

Hiding can be an appropriate option too. For those people with unfinished basements stacked with boxes and crap, your options are plentiful. You just need to worry about moisture and also about who you tell. The old saying about three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead rings true. Your friend Bob tells his friend Chuck, “my neighbor has a great idea for hiding his $50,000 watch collection. He hides it in the corner of his basement”

gr8 reason to buy the cheapest automatic rep rolex sub....thief will think he hit it big. put it right where you keep your keys on the table in the entryway.

also,..i really think some kind of watch service that utilizes some form of anti theft help.....dna tracking, etc, etc you know...uv symbols placed inside and outside case

cameras are big everywhere in 2020..it's amazing people get away with anything...as for safes..that thing better be bolted to the floor to the point where it would cost u so much to do it, you won't do it...anybody can dress like a fedex guy with a dolly and hidden blowtorch......adios watches

i've used the basement when going away...but my house is always such a mess the thief would prolly turn around and leave once he saw it

This. Some keep in safe deposit boxes at the bank. I have my daily watches on winders— others hidden :)

Fortunately, 99% of the burglars are not professionals. They look for a fast and safe operation. Keep it hard, and they will choose other house.

For my tranquility, I have different strategies: most part of the collection in the bank, assurance, alarm in the house ...

The most risky situation is a robbery out of your house, taking with violence the watch in your wrist.

yeah but I like to wear my watches in a pretty regular rotation. I don’t want to have to go to a bank every time I want to wear my watch and then go back to put it away.

Also from the NY Times article about a man who stored his watches in a safe deposit vault.

“There are an estimated 25 million safe deposit boxes in America, and they operate in a legal gray zone within the highly regulated banking industry. There are no federal laws governing the boxes; no rules require banks to compensate customers if their property is stolen or destroyed.”

The crooks took your big bottle of quarters and ran off into the woods with the bottle upside down? Were you able to follow the trail of quarters to the crooks hide out?

Half your watches are kept in your top dresser draw(er), where do you keep the other half?

Some have safes, but they don't look too nasty? What the hell does that mean?

I went into a bank in Hong Kong a couple of months ago to see if I could rent a safe deposit box and was told that they didn't have a waiting list and if they did, it would be upwards of 20 years.

And given the size of Hong Kong flats, hiding watches in an out-of-the-way place isn't much of an option either...

Luckily crime is very low here

You may get in , but out would be the bit I would like to watch ::popcorn::
