Warning on listings from new Kazakhstan Sellers on eBay

Posting this one more as a warning than a recommendation. Seller is located in Kazakhstan, joined eBay less than a month ago, and has no feedback as a seller. I could overlook all of this, but the photos of the watch aren't great and there has been no response to my messaged questions to the seller.

Moved this to its own thread because its worth a wider mention, there are a number of accounts all from Kazakhstan that are 0 feedback or low feedback with cheap items bought or sold to give them a bit, all selling watches and focused on Omega. It’s been happening a couple of months now and I see the same stolen photos and dodgy listings back time and again, its not worth the risk.

Thanks, Ash. Appreciate the additional information. Unfortunately, there are already multiple bids on the watch.

As a side note, in the movie Borat the Kazakhstan scenes were filmed in Romania. 😁

I’ve done business in KZ … it’s a lovely prosperous country, nice people, undeserving of Borat. Actually it’s a sensitive topic.

We have a couple of members from there who are serious vintage collectors too, it’s just this this particular pattern of behaviour to be aware of.

Just to be clear, my initial post was in no way intended to be disparaging of Kazakhstan or its people. I was simply aware of the latest watch scams originating there among a few bad apples and felt it appropriate to warn other members.

I've never seen the need to be someone's first ebay sale, especially on a new account, regardless of where they're from. Maybe I miss out on deals occasionally, but the peace of mind is worth it.

I thought I read that eventually the Kazakhstan govt. gave a nod of appreciation to the movie Borat for the publicity and subsequent renewed interest in their country?

That's what Wikipedia claims.
By 2012, Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov attributed a great rise in tourism to his country—with visas issued rising ten times—to the film, saying "I am grateful to 'Borat' for helping attract tourists to Kazakhstan."

In 1999, while in the U.S. Marines, I served for a year with a foreign officer (a major) from Kazakhstan. He was in the U.S. to learn about setting up a Marine Corps for Kazakhstan. He started his military career in a Soviet military school and then served in the Soviet army (prior to 1991). I always thought it was amazing that as a U.S. service member I was working hand-in-hand with a former Soviet soldier. How things had changed from the 1980's (and before). He was a good guy and very serious about the art of war. I'd like to visit the country some day.

Lemonaid out of lemons. Its out there, may as well use it as a teaching moment…..The western educated Kazakhs in our commercial office in Almaty viewed Borat as a stick in the eye. Then there was the incident where the Nat Anthem from the film was played at a gymnastics competition in Saudi . Yea they did find the film funny but they’d like a better image of their country.

Borat is a stick in the eye for many Americans, too.

Currently at $1,750 with 53 bids and still 2.5 days to go until the auction ends. Still no answer to my message to the seller to see if he/she/they would respond to questions. My gut tells me that the winner of this auction is going to be very unhappy. I hope that I'm wrong, but if I'm not I hope that they pay via PayPal.

I have seen similar listings - there is always one or two strange clothing items being sold by the same seller - in this case a black cloak.

We have had bad eggs from South America, Ukraine, Africa and others....Wonderful that you give a heads-up, let us know of patterns of evil.
Hat's off to you, Ash, you must have clones to contribute as you do.
the art of war.
The "science", maybe, but not art.
Horology, now there is an art!

Yes, when I watched that movie it certainly wasn’t Kazakhstan that I thought came off poorly...

Yes but imagine you are from KZ, going to college in the US,UK, EU etc. on a state paid scholarship, btw., or traveling and hearing nothing but Borat jokes…Just passing on what I heard at dinner when I was there. If anything, the movie made me want to visit KZ. I finally got a project there and was thrilled to go.

Can’t imagine that specifically, but I knew a couple from the country who had moved to Canada, and they thought it was funny. Different strokes I guess...
