·Is it my imagination, or are we in the middle of a full blown vintage watch craze? About three weeks ago I started a thread asking the members here to opine on what qualifies as a vintage watch. Not surprisingly, the interpretation of “vintage“ as it applies to watches was pretty much all over the place. It was subjective to say the least, and in the end it reminded me of the famous quote by supreme court justice Potter Stewart when he was trying to define pornography and couldn’t quite provide a definition but ultimately said, “I know it when I see it“.
In any case, it seems that anywhere you look these days someone is posting, buying, or selling a vintage watch. Of course, on the heel of this the prices of vintage watches are soaring. I’m wondering what has brought this whole thing on? Is it the fact that new offerings seem to be pretty boring lately? Could it be that new watch prices have become so ridiculously high people are looking for value in truly classic vintage pieces? Or, is this a fad or a bubble that will play itself out when people move on to the next thing?
