Hello. I'm new here but have collecting old watches for a while. I acquired this older Omega dress watch a long time ago and really don't even remember when and how but It works and keeps good time. I opened the back and was able to find out the movement which is a 286. Does anyone know much about these watches and any historical value?
The case maker, Ross was located in Long Island, NY, USA.
It was typical for Swiss watch companies including Omega from this period to use American cases mated to imported movements, note the OXG marking on the balance bridge, this was the import code for Omega movements sent to America. Importation of complete watches particularly those exceeding 17-jewels were taxed at a significantly higher rate than raw movements with no more than 17-jewels. This was deemed necessary to protect American watch companies, Hamilton, Waltham, etc. from Swiss competition.
Norman Morris was the sole importer for Omega from the mid 1940s until the late 1970s. His company used a number of American companies, Ross among them to make cases.
Note that "American" Omegas have their own reference numbers which do not have Swiss counterparts. Yours appears to be "Y6301".
