Vintage Omega, but which one?

Dear all,

I was wondering if you could help me with the following. I bought this Omega (2638-4) from 1944 based on the serial number. I looked on the internet for a similar one but couldnt find one, and other Omega’s with ref 2638-4 look different. I was wondering if the ref is correct and in general if the watch is genuine. Thanks in advance for your reactions. View attachment 1459122

The answer is obvious when you compare the condition of the movement to the look of the dial.

I suspect the watch has had an external beauty makeover, including a facelift, to present it for sale, but the movement was ignored.

Agree with JimInOz. OP, where did you buy it? Can you return it?

The seller should have disclosed that the dial was repainted, because it was not a very professional job IMO.

My thought as well. If it was an eBay purchase and the redial wasn’t disclosed, the OP should be able to return it for a refund.

+1 - they could’ve at least tried to center the second scale in the subdial. And where’s the Swiss Made… return if you can.

It's a good idea to spend some time on the forums before the purchase, or buy from someone who is specialised to sell vintage Omegas. Unfortunately, it'll be hard to recognise who is good and who isn't first.

I would not beat myself too much over that watch, if you decide to get into vintage Omega, more will come.

Thanks for the replies. I bought the watch on Catawiki (auction site) and the watch was estimated to be worth 800-1000 euro. Is the watch a ‘frankenwatch’? The seller didnt say anything about a redial / repainting.

The Catawiki evaluations are best ignored. They can be anything between 1000% too high to 10% of the actual value.

Don’t know if your watch is a Frankenwatch, eg made of parts from different refs, but it certainly is a redial and that should’ve be disclosed, as it reduces the value significantly (to parts value, basically, if you ask collectors).

Original dials are around 50% of the watch value. So : Repaint = minus 50% .

That's the problem with catawiki. The so called experts there make a estimate, which gives a item credibility, while the auctioneers know jack shit about watches.

I've bought some stuff there and I've noticed the evaluations are NEVER correct, always too high. Should say Muppet instead of Expert, I feel.
