Got this a while ago, as good as unused and described as needing new battery....

Let's dig this old topic up with some macro shots.
I've seen some cool and high end vintage dials in my days but none come close to this one. It's just a pity they didn't fancy up the case at all, for its simplicity is in stark contrast to the epic dial.

These are great! I have the same model. Kinda hoped it were 18k hour markers, but thanks to that cool ad it’s finally confirmed. The price was not that bad tho, would be roughly $1000 if corrected for inflation.

Nice! I'd be curious to see a picture of your example for reference. I am particularly curious about the case because I wonder if mine was polished. That said: these cases weren't sharp to begin with.

I was at an estate sale about 30 years ago, and I spied a guy ogling two watches. He put them down and moved on. I slid in where he had been, and picked them both up, and bought them. I don’t remember the make on the one, but it had an interesting power reserve feature on it. And there was this early 1950s Mido Power Wind with a bumper movement. I sold the power reserve one, but I kept this one. It came with vinyl covered box and cardboard shell, and the original warranty. I never wear it because it looks dinky on my 7 1/2” wrist.

I’m not sure if anyone would have let them be polished. Mine isn’t that sharp either, but I think too that the cases weren’t that sharp from when they rolled out the factory. I guess it’s part the the design😉

This watch I inherited from my dad. No prize for guessing where it was bought...

I picked up this one on Ebay today. Seems like a pretty unique bird. It has a cal. 529P movement.
Will post own pics when it gets here.

The finishing on the ring is in fact circular.

It has landed, and it has me baffled! The dial is out of this world in terms of finishing and aesthetic.

The - slightly course - sunburst is lilac-grey and the dial features a circularly finished outer ring that is not applied, like I had envisioned, but in fact just finished differently to the rest of the dial. You can tell by the fact that there is no height difference to the center (or the outer edge, for that matter, which shows the original finish protruding past the ring with circular finish). The markers are applied.

I'd be very happy if someone can provide me with reference material, like having owned similar examples or period catalogs.
Also, how would I go about dating it?

Very nice!

I suggest that you take a modest profit. What's your Paypal address? 😁

On a more serious note, Mido made high-quality watches, and their cases and dials were among the very best of the period. That is an uncommon variation.

Classic 1950’s look to my eyes
I agree! Lovely aesthetic.

Thanks Tony! And ha, I didn't figure you were still in the buying business, for you sell all your nice watches anyway. 😁

As you might know, my collection is heavily focused on Eterna, but seeing this stuff just about changes my mind into going hoarding mode on rare Midos.

Unfortunately, it isn't so easy to find the really good ones these days. But they still pop up now and then, and who knows, perhaps I might consider selling the ~20 or so that I still have in my core collection someday!
