WWII US Navy Hamilton Canteen Watch-the first diver watch-987s movement
Used by Navy Frogmen in Underwater Demolition missions
Hamilton used lead solder under the crystal and the canteen style at the crown
to try to keep water out
These came on a plastic type strap made by Ranger-Tennere in NY
Elgin made their canteen watches post WWII

The theater of use of these Hamilton and the Elgin watches during WW2 seems to depend on what brand is being sold or is currently owned or favored by the person writing the article. My Elgin, with the soldered in crystal and injection molded plastic band (kept in storage, nasty to wear!) has a movement serial number from 1944 as listed in the National Watch Company's (Elgin's) logs, fairly "WW2".

I've read a well researched article that only the Elgin watches went overseas and I've read otherwise. I suppose we'll never know the truth as a bit over half of the UDT swimmers who actually wore these watches into combat died doing so and most of the rest have faded away.

It is, I believe, more important to remember the efforts made by these men and enjoy owning the bit of history these watches represent.

Nice Hamilton by the way. The best of the American brands and as good as anything else out there.

Haven't been diving in a couple of months, but that hasn't kept me from enjoying some old divers in the office. Wearing the one on the left this week. The 42mm case gives it a nice presence on the wrist, but it has a low profile and is not bulky. The technology behind the super compressor cases is amazing, particularly as developed 50 + years ago.

Let's see some more.

huge vintage diver fan myself. this thread IMHO needs stickied in one of the non-open discussion subfora.

Love dive watches, particularly the 42mm Super Compressor variety.

One I bought here a while ago, not getting much use lately so might end up moving it along to its next owner.
