That threath is a great discussion

Yeah actually! Don't know where I lie on that debate. Right now, don't see a premium for Mark 1s (though some dealers certainly try) but I wouldn't be surprised if it did have a premium like 10-20 years from now

That´s an interesting comment. What is the basis for your clue ? I only see very few A386 in comparable condition to judge about the revent values. Thanks.

No particular basis, just intuition. A386 will remain attractive to the market I think because it is 1) a historically important movement 2) very attractive design 3) uncommon, especially in good condition with original non-dark lume. And with that being the case, I think the market will hone in on the minor differences more and more as awareness grows and examples (and Mk1-correct parts) become more scarce.

The scarcity and primacy of the Mk1 will drive the market in the long-term I think, like leaf subdial hands and straight chrono hands for 2998s are beginning to.

But not so far in the near-term. As for the "dealers trying to mark up Mk1s" in the near-term, compare the refinished-case analog/shift one for $28,000 and the refinished-looking-case + service subdial hands Mk2/3 the European Watch has had for a while now, initially at $18k now and $15k. Both are comparable reliable-but-pricey dealers that price at similarly high levels (arguably European Watch more so). Just from memory, I've seen more and more sellers try to pitch Mk1 as being more special.

But that being said, I haven't really seen it succeed though yet, haven't myself seen a comparable Mk1 selling (actual closed transaction) for significantly more than a comparable Mk2 at around the same time in the past two years. The unpolished exquisite Mk2 that Rarebirds just sold yesterday was asking a price a half-notch below that refinished-case analog/shift Mk1, but they are not what I'd call comparable dealers.

But others actually log this stuff and would know better (if I had time right now, I could dive into the AlphaHands case numbers catalog and run an analysis)

Do you mind if I ask what the Rarebirds example sold for? (I am guessing 'half-notch' is not half but possibly $27,500?)

Rarebirds was like €25-26k. He only would sell it for that kind of money. But you dont know as long you have a comfirmation of the buyer. Andee from rarebirds looks to me as a honest guy who knows his stuff. He sold according to himself 12-13 a386 during the last 5 years. Also really interesting if the whole market, not only dealers will acknowlegde these small differences, like on the Rolex kind of level. For now these detailed info isnt really as wide spread. And my prediction is that it sure will. These babies are rare. Really important design, movement etc. Rarer than most of the other true icons and undervalued if you compare it to the others. I remember 2015, then the prices were on 6k plus for good examples. If I could turn back time....

Most have wrong and/or service parts, some are in dreadful condition with scratched dials, dark patina or even relumed. To me, each A386 must be assessed individually and value of a top one can easily be 3 times as expensive as a poor one. One of the reason is that spare parts are impossible to find....

Value may increase.... This is certain

Good luck...

Indeed, indeed , finding a pristine, period correct A386 is like finding a needle in a haystack. Personnally, I will never buy a watch whether from Matthew Bain (prices way above the market and watches not always in stellar condition) and neither will I ever purchase something from the European Watch Company (they just give a 6 month warranty on the watches they sell that is not good enough when you spend over 10000$ for a watch purchase) . A pristine, fully original, period correct and unmolested a386 value wil lrise more than certainly.

I bought a very decent Seamaster 300 at a fair price from EWC a few months ago, I am super happy with it. Now I agree that a 6-month warranty is short...

Agree with you regarding the A386.
My mk2 will probably be my last watch for sale....

I wont call it a golden nugget since it all depends on which a386 Mark variation, condition and the prices which reflect asking prices. It is an interesting piece of info; you are right I should have shared it but I forgot to do so. As a really bad dealer it would be in my interest if I would share it to drive prices up like crazy(40k!;-) )

My purpose of this threath was to discuss the underlying opinions on the value of a386 in all it variations. Next time I will be more clear about this in my original post.

And on topic we get some interesting insights about the current market for A386 and the collectors rationale about valuating this iconic watch. I think this has become quite a usefull threath. Many thanks for the useful insights and accumulation of useful info!

Dear WVW, Shall we conclude you have one for sale or will do very shortly?
