US Tariffs on Switzerland

So, big in the news the US tariffs on imports from outside the US - of course Switzerland will be affected as well. I think Switzerland will be paying +31% tariff on its exports to the US.

Already expensive Swiss watches will become more expensive - by quite a lot really. And Rolex has recently opened a new factory to increase their production.

Bad timing from the watch company ?

Already a thread live discussing this:

Noted, sorry.

But the other thread title could have been better as it makes no specific reference to tariffs - which is the headline story.

Just to be clear, tariffs are paid by the importer not the exporter. So the 31% is paid by the buyer in the US, not by the exporter in Switzerland.

As has already noted, this is not a tax on Switzerland or other foreign jurisdictions, it is a tax on the domestic American consumer who now has to pay more for his imported luxury goods. When this actually sinks in, and people start to notice price changes and shortages I wonder if they will be quite so acquiescent.

If there is a fundamental misunderstanding about how this works, perhaps it is best there is a separate thread like this one to break it down!

Of course, but the country gets mentioned to make sense of it. Otherwise you would have just a list of tariffs that would be meaningless:

The importer into the US will pay the following tariffs:

45%
36%
31%
20%
10%

It is a near meaningless list unless you attach the rate to the country (of origin of the export) eg 31% and Switzerland.

Any bets on how long it takes Omega to increase service prices in the US?

(I am assuming incoming parts will be subject to tariffs…?)
