Hi all! I'm new to the world of watches and would like to discover and share this passion with a group of like minded people. As a result, I am thinking of starting a horology appreciation and education society in university where I am currently studying.

I would like to seek your advice as to what activities/discussions a horology society generally organises? Any advice at all is much appreciated!

Cheers all!

Which uni would that be?

As to the "society".

I think a good example would be "Time4aPint" which was started and is managed by @tyrantlizardrex, one of our own forum members.

When he first joined ΩF he was a complete nong and knew nothing about watches.

Following our mentorship and hand holding his horological expertise has blossomed and he can now tell the difference between an automatic and a manual wind, and even has a vague grasp of how "electric" watches work.

He currently has a loyal following of Horological Tragics who indulge in a lot of watch related stuff, and a few drinks along the way.

I recommend you start a drinking society, & just wear a watch.
That's what Uni was for in my day.

What? Alcohol?

A GTG a couple of years ago including SteveP and a few others who don't seem to be on OF (BrianS are you here?) had us drinking some fancy bottled water courtesy of Phillips (sorry, don't remember brand, tap water is my usual 🙁 ) and eating a Pret-a-Manger sandwich sitting on a bench in Berkeley Square watching all the Lamborghinis and Ferraris not moving in 0 mph traffic.

Do the Meet-up, don't worry about fripperies!

Yeah I'm thinking about maybe weekly get-togethers, visits to museums, watch shows, maybe vintage markets etc. May I ask what you guys talked about? I ask that because I don't want my get-togethers to be lecture style sermons on watch brand or movement histories, but rather a journey that we all explore together.

Cheers!
