I mean carsandwatches is like that; but I honestly don't think that price is that bad for that watch. Imagine if that was 37/38mm... easily $8k+

I don’t want to get ‘off topic’ in this thread but, based on what?

They are generally expensive as a seller/retailer (this is known) but for novice buyers provide a level of comfort in knowing that they are selling something reliable and will stand behind it.

With UG I've found/learned you either gamble on places like eBay and auction sites (which many veterans here do) or go to reliable sellers (but not discounting your own research).

Ok, ill put it another way. This 1930s art deco UG is undoubtedly rare. What would you value it? Perhaps $3500 is a bit steep, but to say that the price is insane? I mean find another example. I think this is a lot closer to a $3000 watch than a $1000 one.

So my Zenith with same dial and Staybrite case must be worth the same because it’s rarer. I can tell you month and year it was made and where it went. The dial is not unique to Universal Geneve and the gold content is what it is.

I totally understand what you are saying with the "find me another" argument regarding scarcity. However, rare doesn't necessarily mean valuable, and perhaps this is especially true in the current market when we are evaluating a small watch, cased in gold. I have owned very unusual UGs that no one wanted and sadly the eventual sale price could do nothing else but reflect that fact. ::facepalm1::

I mean at the end of the day, if something is rare, and the pool of consumers for it is small, then the price is really arbitrary. I find it (and Mazoue's salmon dial example) incredibly attractive and if I were rich I would snap even the small gold one up. Just because you wouldn't buy it for $3500, doesn't mean it's overpriced. Ultimately the price is determined by those few people who do value it. For many years there have been incredibly rare watches that were deemed uninteresting or unattractive, and were sitting on shelves (so to speak) at the now paltry prices they were listed at, until they were "discovered" by the right subset of dealers, collectors, journalists, etc. and entered the mainstream consciousness. Many of these watches you could have bought for what seems like pennies now, yet at the time people thought the prices were outrageously expensive.

I don't know what argument you're trying to make. I am sure your Zenith is lovely and I would love to see pictures of it. I have watches that are probably worth next to nothing, but they are objectively rare, and in my opinion very special, and I wouldn't let go of them for anywhere near what I think people would pay for them. Watch collecting is irrational; market values really only apply to industrially produced goods. For one-off pieces for which there is no price reference or comparison; the "value" comes down to how badly the small handful of other people out there that appreciate said piece want it.

Ref 5922: https://www.chrono24.nl/universalgenve/unicompax--id30246136.htm Redial unfortunately

Interestingly enough:

Serial is 630.154 and '35'

Another 5922 is this one:
https://www.phillips.com/detail/universal/CH080515/236
Serial is 630.122 and '3' so both serial and the additional number differ 32.

A little bit later 5922 was used for Contax (see i.e. https://www.shucktheoyster.com/portfolio/universal-geneve-gold-vintage-chronograph-5922/)

I would actually tend to think the ch24 watch IS a Contax (and the seller has no idea about it). Pity for the redial…
