UK purchase on Chrono - Vat?

Thinking of making a purchase on Chrono24 and finding the UK VAT confusing.

I’m UK based looking to purchase a watch from the UK but sellers seem to have confusing statements saying pay 20% extra or “pay taxes your end”.

Does anyone know the actual rules for this?

Much appreciated.

If you are buying from a U.K. dealer and you are in the U.K. you have nothing to pay bar the price you are quoted.

outside you pay vat at the appropriate rate. Likewise if you import a watch you will pay 20% plus customs charges.

There is at least one uk seller on chrono24 who states that vat is extra to the selling price, it’s the same on his website, I’ve forgotten the name though. I think it’s a way of showing a cheaper price to attract you in. Plus I don’t think preowned has Vat anyway (this is different if being shipped abroad) so might be worth emailing the seller.

Presumably if it is a retailer then they can advertise ex VAT and then add UK VAT on sale to a UK buyer (though possibly not on the full price using margin scheme) Then buyers in Europe add their local VAT.

Only if a seller is listed with the IOSS system AND has an ID Seller number, to be used for every sale to an EU member country, you are not charged as buyer with VAT on import because the seller add`s the mandatory EU taxes and pays these to the destination country customs office.
If the seller does not have, or does not use the ID seller system, you will be taxed by the courrier that delivers it to you, regardless of any promisses. This is why you now get taxed twice when using ebay, once by the platform and second by the delivery people. ebay will refund the VAT if you have documents to proof you paid double, but Not the courriers handling costs of 4 to 25 euro depending on shipment value.

If it's a UK based seller the price you pay will include VAT if applicable. In other words you won't have an unexpected bill from another source. Note this may not be the price they quote though, since they may be quoting ex VAT to appear cheaper.

I just bought a watch from a UK based seller on chrono24 and there was nothing extra to pay.

There is one Omega seller on C24 that clearly states all prices must add 20% for VAT for UK buyers.

I thought the VAT they paid was only on the profit?

I don't know how this works in other countries, but in Singapore, there is a specific law for second hand retailers, and they only have to pay GST (or VAT) on the profit instead of the sale price, so they must keep and provide good records of their original cost of the used items.
