As an aside, I'm looking to get a vintage black gilt dialed Omega - I'd appreciate any recommendations from you guys.

(And no, I haven't been drinking the 'Mad Men' Koolaid - I confess, I've never watched the programme.)

If this has been re-dialed, they've made a good job of keeping the 'age'...

Or, it it correct because it's not a 'De Ville'?

Hi FrenchBigCrown and good morning.

This is indeed an example of a correct and factory original dial.

However, that is not because it does not say De Ville on it.

There is a very clear example of a watch belonging to @seekingseaquest that proves this Seamaster DeVille with a black dial and crosshair made famous by Don Draper does exist.

A link to the thread about it is here:

Best wishes,

Rudi

I have to say Rudi, some of us aren't quite fully sold on the concept they do exist just yet. There are anomalies on the one you show as noted in the thread.

Even if it does turn out that there is a black dial crosshair SMDV the chances of finding one will be so vanishing small as to be insignificant. I am reminded of a line in Chickenhawk, the Robert Mason memoir about his time in Vietnam. It goes something like 'of the 33 kinds of snake in Vietnam, 31 are poisonous with those ratios you can afford to come to a preludial judgement: kill them all.'

In other words, treat all black dial Omega dress watches as suspicious until you achieve the nirvana of knowledge that means you can spot a good one. Most of us never get there. Life is just too short.

Ok, stand "corrected", or better said, more clarified!

What do you guys think of this?

The awful photos don't help. 🙁

What do you think of it? People here are more likely to respond if you elaborate what your evaluation is - show your research. Also, as you said, more pictures are needed as this one clearly isn’t any help.

What I can tell you without better pictures is that I get a very bad feeling when dealers present bad repro buckles / straps as original Omega parts.

And a dealer that can’t provide a single sharp picture of the dial? Mmmh.

Thank you.

My evaluation is - the watch and gold bracelet look legit, but it's impossible to tell if the dial is a refurb from those photos. And yeah, the repro strap/buckle doesn't fill me with confidence.

I've asked for better pictures - let's see how they respond.

pictures to bad to really say something, but bad pictures often indicates, that the seller tries to hide something.
in this case i could be a redial.
Indeed. 😀

Their reply:

Hello,

I am afraid we have no further clearer pictures and of course it is perfectly possible that the whole watch has been refurbished as it was very expensive, when purchased recently!

It doesn't sound like it is the watch you are looking for? You maybe be better looking for an original unrestored watch and refurbishing it yourself? This is a watch for someone looking for a super quality authentic vintage 1960's watch to wear immediately, without worry about reliability issues.

Kind regards
t7nee

This is a DeVille / pre-DeVille dial variant I often see with a crosshair. Here are some examples that look okay to me. I’d want better photos of the one above of course (same with the second below).

So some Seamaster DeVilles DID have (original) crosshair dials?

Others here seem to think not.

Confusing ???? 🤔

The first ones a redial imo, fonts aren’t quite correct and the automatic text is poorly aligned with the Omega logo. Not sure about the second one as photos aren’t good enough.
